The Wellspring

The Wellspring is, in a word, a contradiction.   The City of Glass, ruled by the Sultan of the Scorching Sea, sits on a vast reservoir of water, and has many beautiful gardens. The oases and aquifers of the Sea of Dreams – the desert that swallows the world – are well-known and well-charted, and are the seeds of many townships and villages. But the Wellspring is beyond all of these things. The Wellspring is a thing of myth and legend. The Wellspring is an enormous grove of lush trees and flowers, surrounding a lake of water so pristine and sacred that drinking it is said to give you eternal youth.   The Wellspring is a story told to the childish and the desperate. Its legend brought the elves across the mountains to the Sea from a distant, dying land, seeking the sacred place that once breathed life into the first of their kind.   The Wellspring should not exist. The Sea of Dreams crushes all hope and twists all fortune.   The Wellspring cannot exist. For if such a place of desperate hope were to be found, it would bring only cruelty, and sadness, and utter, crushing despair.   And only the Void would cherish such a thing.

Geography

The stories of the Wellspring describe it thus: a fathomless lake of crystal clear spring water that disappears into a deep, dark blue at its centre, and is filled with countless sparkling lights, like stars; a grove of lush trees of an impossible variety, some towering hundreds of feet into the air, others short and squat and covered in needles; flowers that shudder and sway in an undetectable wind; and small animals and insects that flutter and scuttle, innocently, between the trees and through the undergrowth.   Some people say it sits, impossibly, at the top of a mountain peak, or the bottom of a dry ocean bed. Some say it is located in the exact centre of the desert, while others claim it is sheltered in an underground cavern.   There are also people who claim that the City of Glass, with its heaven-blessed bounty of water, is in fact the Wellspring of legend. Those people might even be wrong.
