Mental characteristics

Personal history

Varis is an adventurous wood elf mercenary that has roamed the seas for hundreds of years. Delighting in gambling, drinking, eating as much as exploring and fighting. Varis seldom stays in one spot for a longer time than what is needed to finish his current contract, sampling the local delicacies, and sober up. One never knows if Varis is in town to finish a contract, or if he is simply dropping by because of a rumor of an especially fine batch of wine.
Varis was born in the city of Maluma, an ancient city inhabited solely by Wood Elves, secluded on a small tropical island. His mother and father were both guardsmen, and Varis was pushed by both of them into joining the military school in the city. There he recieved basic education, a harsh disciplinary upbringing, as well as martial training with the double-bladed scimitar, the signature weapon of the Maluman guardsmen. During this time all Varis was focused on was improving himself to be as useful a guardsman as possible. His single-mindedness made him a candidate for the kingsguard, the personal retinue of the king. He eventually joined the kingsguard, and served as one of the personal guards of the king.
The king, last of his line and without a male heir to take the crown, was a severely paranoid man. He required constant vigilance from his guardsmen, and Varis spent most of his waking time at the side of the king. This paranoia also affected the kings' decisionmaking, making a great amount of nobles in the city grow tired of his reign. Varis just happened to be the guardsman on duty when the assassin struck, and although the assailant was repelled without any harm done to the king, the king could not be convinced that Varis was not in on the plot to kill him. Varis, along with the other guardsman on duty, were sentenced to exile, and were banished from the city. Varis left his homelands with little more than the clothes on his back and the weapon in his hands.
Arriving in a much more bustling port city than he was used to, Varis soon started his career as a sellsword. Sometimes serving as a bodyguard to the high and mighty, sometimes paid to track down certain individuals, and at times even getting hired as a negotiator, Varis gained a wide skill set, making him apt at both combat and negotiations. Having had to deal with the murkier sides of civilization, he also has a knack for deception and tailing. Varis delights in the drinking, gambling, and luxuries of life that was denied to him during his guardsmanship.
Varis has travelled far and wide, finding joy in discovering the different cultures and people of the world.
Varis was travelling the obscured seas when he happened upon Barovia. Intrigued by the fog-laden lands, he started travelling in them, but soon found himself unable to leave. He now travels Barovia, hoping to find out how to leave the island.

Education

Training in the combat style favored in Maluma, a style focused more on mobility, dodging blows, and finding faults in the enemies stance
Basic schooling in reading, writing, and the like.

Employment

Former kingsguard of Maluma, which lasted for about 50 years.
Varis has worked as a sellsword for much of his life outside of Maluma, which has led him to take a lot of different kinds of jobs. He's served as a personal guard, has worked as a bounty hunter, and even worked as a bouncer in one of the shadier taverns of Wittering for a while. When work dries out, Varis usually leaves whatever city he is in for a new one, either travelling by foot if the distance permits, or buying passage on a cheap ship. Once he has arrived in a new city, Varis quickly looks for work from whomever he can find.

Failures & Embarrassments

Exiled from his homelands.

Social

Contacts & Relations

Varis seldom makes long lasting friendships due to his way of work. Most relationships he has is with former employers. If Varis would have a close friendship with someone, it would most likely be a fellow adventurer he has travelled with.
Varis can often easily find contacts in cities he comes to that just happens to have work for someone of his particular skillset.

Parents are alive as far as he knows, although he hasn't had any contact with them since leaving Maluma.

Charismatic and outgoing. Has quite an ego sometimes, and often likes quoting his own "rules of adventuring" that he has made up over the years. Does not have horrible etiquette, but is more used to less elegant establishments in the world.

Mannerisms

Due to being part of a long-lived race, Varis sometimes has some trouble adjusting his mindset to races who live shorter lives. To Varis, it seems natural to not fret too much about non-permanent injuries, since they will probably be gone in a decade or two. Likewise, he doesn't care much for kings, rulers, or mayors, since they often rise and fall very quickly in the eyes of an elf.

Hobbies & Pets

Likes spending evenings playing card games or other forms of gambling, either for money or just for fun.

Wealth & Financial state

Often spends most of his money on gambling, fine food, and good drink. rarely saves up for anything big, although he has been interested in starting to save money to be able to afford a small ship for more freedom and ease of transportation.
In terms of investments, the only investments Varis has is in food and drink. He's been known to sometimes do work for someone in exchange for them putting away a cask of wine, a particularly fine wheel of cheese, or similar kinds of food, for him to collect in a couple of decades.
Varis does not own a house of any kind, as he travels far too much to have a permanent place of residence. If he ever could afford a ship, it would probably be equal parts home and sea-vessel for him.
