The Island of Wittering

Jutting from the Obscured Sea stands a rocky island, with daunting cliffs and impressive peaks. The island measures 237 miles as the bird flies from the western to the eastern tip, and a 112 miles perpendicular from north to south. Several smaller isles are dotted around the larger landmass.

Geography

The Island of Wittering is a large island formed around the above-surface peaks of an underwater mountain range. The windward south-eastern side of the mountain range is generally humid, whereas the north-western leeward side is more arid. The island is generally hilly, with more flat plains in the rivers' wakes. It's shores are generally shingle beaches, and cliffs are common among the coastline.

Mountains

The Whistling Spine is named after the sound the wind produces as it passes through, emitting a soft high-pitched whistle. The mountains consist of a mixture of limestone, slate, granite and gneiss. The range itself is old, and generally eroded. The snow line lies at 2900 meters. Four notable high peaks exist.
  • Mount Dalinar (4207m)
The tallest peak of Wittering, jutting out above the surrounding forested mountains like a broken bone. Consists of mostly granite, giving it a grey appearance.
  • Mount Elkohar (3355m)
The second highest peak, situated close to Firebreath. The Clearflow originates deep within the mountain, thundering down in an impressive waterfall into the Clearflow Lake.
  • Mount Kaladin (2821m)
The third highest peak, made of mostly limestone. Evidence suggests that a glacier might have once lied on the southern side of the mountain.
  • Mount Eonar (2570m)
Mount Eonar is the fourth highest peak of the Whistling Spine, mostly due to it missing a peak, instead having a large crater at the top. It is believed to be a dormant volcano.
There are three passes through the spine, generally open throughout the tenmonth. Travel from Wilting through Dawning is however ill advised, as the weather can quickly turn for the worse.

Rivers

Several rivers flow throughout the island, all on the windward side of the Whistling Spine.
  • The Clearflow
The largest river on the island, originating from Mount Elkohar and ending in the Witterbay. The Clearflow is a gentle river, supplying several of the smaller villages as well as the City of Wittering of fresh water. It tends to flood in the lower areas during the third to fifth month, depending on the severity of the winter beforehand.
  • The Springflow
The Springflow originates out of overflow of Pinelake, and ends in the Three Sisters. Several small streams merge with the Springflow, collecting water from the southern banks of Mount Dalinar. The river can be treacherous in the spring, as large amounts of meltwater flow through.
  • The Minthel
The Minthel originates deep within the Whistling Spine, collecting melt- and rainwater from the surrounding peaks, and ends in the Pinelake. Several creeks merge with the Minthel along its course. It is the prime source of water for the Dun Algaz outpost.
  • The Pinewash
The Pinewash is a fast flowing river, originating to the west of Mount Eonar. It ends in the Witterbay. Several creeks merge with the Pinewash. It collects the majority of the rain- and melt-water in the region, and is notorious for it's fast flow and treacherous waters.
  • The Grey Creek
The Grey Creek is a smaller creek running down the coniferous woods east of Dun Algaz. It merges into the Pinelake. It has a distinct coloration due to sediment it carries.
  • The Midbar Creek
The Midbar Creek is a smaller creek originating to the north of Midbar, and merges into the Pinewash nearby Flatrise.
  • The Silver Creek
The Silver Creek is a smaller creek originating to the east of Flatrise, carrying rain- and meltwater from Mount Eonar. It merges into the Pinewash. It carries the same sediment as the Grey Creek, but contains trace amounts of precious silver ore washing away, leading to an illustrious glister.
  • The Cabbling Melt
The Cabbling Melt runs through the pass between Mount Dalinar and Elkohar, and carries rain- and meltwater. It mergesinto the Clearflow nearby the Oak Docks.
  • The Firthrun
The Firthrun is all that remains of what must've once been a large meltwater river originating in the glacier that once laid upon Mount Kaladin. It merges into the Clearflow.
  • The Virwall Rill
The Virwall Rill is a smaller creek, carrying mostly meltwater. It merges into the Clearflow.

Lakes

A total of three larger lakes lie in low points of the island, fed with melt- and rainwater by creeks and rivers.
  • Clearflow Lake
The Clearflow Lake is the most western lake. It originates from a waterfall flowing out of Mount Elkohar, and feeds the Clearflow. Firebreath is build upon its shores. Its waters are remarkably clear.
  • Pinelake
The Pinelake is a smalle rlake lying in the forests of the inlands, surrounded by pinewood on three sides. It is fed by the Grey Creek and the Minthel, and feeds the Springflow. Pinedeep is build upon its shores.
  • Lake of the Three Sisters
The Three Sisters were once three smaller lakes that have since connected, leaving shallow banks within the lake itself. It is fed by the Springflow and the Clearflow, and feeds the continuation of the Clearflow. Sisterharbor is build upon its shore.

Isles

Several isles, ranging from shifting sand banks to the peaks of underwater mountains, lie dotted around the island.
  • Last Bastion
The Isle of Last Bastion is formed around the Waystone standing in the Witterbay. Large cliffs sprout up along the obsidian monolith, giving it a rather daunting visage. The island is otherwise barren, with little to no growth.
  • Westspine
The Westspine is the westernmost above-surface peak of the Whistling Spine. It is a barren rock with little to no soil and high cliffs.
  • Eastspine
The Eastspine is the easternmost above-surface peak of the Whistling Spine. It is a hilly and mountainous isle, with shrub- and grassland upon it.
  • Seatooth
The Seatooth is a rock formation jutting out of the Witterby, partially plateauing at the top. It's cliffs rise tens to hundreds of meters, and the waters surrounding it can be treacherous.
  • Arwen's Desolation
Arwen's Desolation is a barren rock with little to no soil, and seemingly no plant- or wildlife. Any of our own experiments with growing anything on the isle have failed.
  • Siren's Call
Siren's Call is a cavernous limestone isle. Despite the ongoing rumors, no evidence has been found of any actual sirens.
  • Shifting Banks
The Shifting Banks are a collection of large interconnecting sand banks, shifting location over time. Whereas nothing lives on them, they can prove dangerous to passing ships.
  • Lestra's Tear
Lestra's Tear is a small, mostly barren isle on the northern shore.
  • The Barrens
The Barrens are a collection of bare granite pillars jutting out of the ocean. Whereas an impressive sight from the nearby cliffs, the water below is turbulent and dangerous.
  • Sinkholm
Sinkholm is one of the larger and more treacherous sandbanks between the main island and the Eastspine.
  • Seatake
Seatake is one of the larger sandbanks between the main island and the Eastspine, and is notorious for having taken many a ship that tried to sail the passage inbetween as a shortcut. Occasionally, one can spot a wreck in the shallow waters.
  • Land's End
Land's End is a large limestone rock, jutting above the waters between the main island and the Eastspine. The remnants of an ancient lighthouse stand upon the rock.
  • Reedholm
Reedholm is one of the many islets between the main island and the Eastspine.
  • Fogwatch
Fogwatch is one of the many islets between the main island and the Eastspine. The area surrounding fogwatch is often foggy in the mornings.
  • The Shifting Nine
The Shifting Nine are a collection of nine sandbanks that are rather mobile. Caution is to be advised when traversing this area by boat, as mapping them seems nigh impossible.

Fauna & Flora

Flora

The flora of the island of Wittering is mostly temperate in nature, with forests covering the windward inland side of the island. The leeward northern shore is much more arid in comparison. Flora seems to not take well to the ground, despite our findings that it should be fertile. Every flora planted within earth transported to Wittering from any of the other islands seems to not negate this effect. Once it is connected to the ground, the withering effect takes place. Many of the trees and plants are as such not as thick or healthy as they should logically be. Many deciduous trees lose their leaves early in the year, and the coniferous trees and temperate grasslands have a slight brown hue and brittle appearance.
  • Temperate deciduous forest
The inlands contain a mixture of maple, oak, birch, pine, and fir trees.
  • Temperate coniferous forest
The higher areas of the inlands contain a mixture of cedar, cypress, fir, pine, spruce and the rare redwood tree.
  • Semi-arid shrublands
The northern shore, as well as several of the isles contain a mixture of shrubs, grasses, and the occasional short tree.
  • Temperate grasslands
The inlands and the southern shore contain a mixture of grasses and heather.
  • Temperate freshwater wetlands
The southern shore contains several wetlands in the lower areas, which contain a mixture of grasses, sedges, and rushes. The free-floating aquatic flora seems healthier in comparison, and are found a plenty.
  • Badlands
Some of the isles contain no living flora whatsoever.

Fauna

As the attracting effect of the Waystone is noticeable on all living beings, the fauna of Wittering too is rather diverse due to many invasive species attracted to the island over the years. The inland woods, the Whistling Spine, and the many caverns and ruins form an excellent habitat for many creatures.

Natural Resources

Ore

Natural ores, including iron, coal, copper, gold and silver seem to be common among the mountains.

Wood

The woodlands covering the island are generally thin and of low quality, growing gnarled and unsteady. For this reason, many of the woodlands remain largely untouched.

Agriculture

Agriculture suffers the same problems as seen with other flora, if taking to the ground at all. Seeds occasionally take to the ground, but will wither away over time instead of growth despite the favorable climate.

Fish

The oceans around Wittering seem bountiful, and fish are plentiful. There is little rooted growth, and most aquatic plants are free-floating.
