The Gatekeepers

Gateway to their home

The Gatekeepers are the entryway into the Nightlight Zone. All someone has to do is get close enough to them, where the creatures will transport them into the realm from the surface, apparently not caring what animal they do transport. Some populations of humans have seen them from the shoreline, and turned them into a folktale. For more information on this species, look towards  the entrance to the Nightlight Zone, their legend, and Netarts Valley.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Gatekeepers typically aren't seen clearly most of the time, but there are individuals that have gotten close enough to them to accurately describe them. They appear as enormous grey-colored tetrapods, with impossibly long legs, stretching far beneath the surface of the water. Their heads are long, and have deep grooves on their chins, reminiscent of a humpback whale. Their bodies also have a texture similar to stone, and are covered with algae and barnacles.

Genetics and Reproduction

It's completely unknown how this species reproduces, or, if they even need to reproduce. If they did have reproductive cycles like regular animals, it would possibly be tricky. Newborns would have to sink to the seafloor, whether they be born from eggs or born alive. From there, their legs would have to be noticeably short for them to stand properly, and their growth cycles would involve their legs reaching impossible lengths in comparison to their bodies.

Growth Rate & Stages

Some specimens observed have been much smaller in comparison to most others in a given group, but whether or not these are younglings is yet to be determined.

Ecology and Habitats

Gatekeepers have been most commonly sighted in Netarts Valley, and some other settlements along the West Coast, but various other reports from around the world describe similar entities. They don't appear to stay in one place for very long.

Dietary Needs and Habits

These creatures have never been observed eating anything. It is possible they eat some of the animals they suck in with their whirlpools, or they simply have no need to eat.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Gatekeepers are always sighted in large groups, but they only go as far as to acknowledge each other's existence. It is unknown if there is any socilaity beyond that.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

No one can be sure that Gatekeepers have eyes, as no one can physically see them, but these creatures seem to get around easily enough. They also make a guttural howling noise, which could be thought of as a form of echolocation. It is also thought that they hardly need senses anyway as they do not face any natural predators.
