Spiralwood

The Spiralwood is an enormous plant that grows into an array of different shapes, vaguely akin to a spiral, that can be found in practically any surface of the Pits. They defend themselves only with their large sizes and their tough exteriors.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Spiralwoods have thick stems covered in a bark-like substance growing in a vaguely spiral pattern. The bark features a rough texture with smooth-shaped grooves in between the bark. At the end of the stem is its kelp-like leaves, used both for collecting chemicals to eat, as well as enticing herbivores to come closer to this plant.

Genetics and Reproduction

The Spiralwood commonly relies on animal dispersal to spread its spores. Various plant-eating species will attempt to eat the kelp on the end of this plant, collecting spores on their bodies in the process. These spores are stored on the tips of the kelp, and stick to a creature's skin by excreting a puddle of a glue-like substance.

Growth Rate & Stages

A spore will travel on a creature's backside until the glue dissipates into the surrounding waters. The spores fall off, and land in the ground, where they will take root by growing sharp roots to burrow into the rock below. The plant will begin growing a long fleshy stem, which will soon become covered by its bark shell as it grows. The stem will grow into a spiral pattern, before growing its leaves at the tip of the stem. Some creature may try to eat the leaves as the plant is still maturing, but this doesn't affect the plant's survival in the long run.

Ecology and Habitats

Spiralwoods only live in the Pits, and will grow virtually anywhere, sometimes with others of their kind. In rare occasions, they can grow into small pocket forests, located anywhere from large open areas to nearby halocline lakes and streams.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Spiralwoods are chemosynthetic just like most Nightlight Zone plants.

Biological Cycle

Because herbivores constantly eat away at the kelp growing off the tip of the stem, this plant constantly has to replenish it. It lives in a continuous cycle of letting its leaves get eaten, spreading its spores onto the creature, and regrowing them for future arrivals.
