Sand Stalker
The Sand Stalker, not to be confused with the Sand Crawler, is a vicious hunter, complete with large pincers, a tough exoskeleton, and along tail filled with venom. They can also jump a great distance to catch up to their prey, even if it leaves their soft underbellies exposed to attack.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Sand Stalkers' bodies are large and bulky, almost completely covered by a smooth exoskeleton. Their pincers are large and robust, each as large as the creature's face, which contains long feeding appendages and six small eyes. They also have long walking legs, and the barbs on their tails are nearly see-through, with small bumps on the surface.
Genetics and Reproduction
Being solitary creatures, Sand Stalkers will usually invest heavily into any potential mate they come across. Most of the time, they will engage in short brawls for the female to test the male's metal, which consist of them jumping onto each other and wrestling with their pincing claws. Their eggs are laid on the father's back, while the mother will leave in search of other scorpions to mate with.
Growth Rate & Stages
Baby Sand Stalkers hatch prematurely, and need extra time on their father's back in order for their shells to properly form. The father will store flesh from kills to share with them, resting for long periods of time in large rocky formations, until they grow large enough to survive on their own. As they grow, some will stick together for a while, helping each other kill and eat newborns of other species. Once fully grown, Sand Stalkers will tend towards more solitary lifestyles, acting more aggressively towards other members of their species.
Ecology and Habitats
Sand Stalkers only live in the Fields, mainly where rock formations are plentiful. Occasionally, when a father is resting with his young, he may pick up rocks with his claws, and create a makeshift fort to protect himself. Other times, these scorpions pick up rocks to use as defense against rival scorpions.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Sand Stalkers mainly eat Kormozoans, Spinapterids, and Rhino Scorpions. They'll attempt to hide from their prey either behind rocks for swimming creatures, or with vast distance. When their prey gets close, they'll run at high speeds to catch them in their tracks. They'll grab onto their bodies with their pincers, then stab their barbed tail into their sides, killing them and dissolving their insides for them to eat. Some have also been observed killing their prey by bending their bodies far enough to snap in half.
Biological Cycle
These scorpions shed their skins from time to time, sometimes feeding them to their young while they are still growing. Oftentimes, sand can build up in between their shells when in periods of rest, slightly hindering their movement when crawling and striking with their barbed tails.
Additional Information
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Sand Stalkers rely on sight and hearing to sense their environment, which are very well-developed for their kind. Their smell is less effective than anything.
