Deep Koi

Deep Koi are small herbivorous fish living a life of travel across the Dunes, and constantly getting into conflicts with other members of their species.

Basic Information

Anatomy

The Deep Koi has a small body with a heavily tapered end. Its large head contains a mouth with two sharp teeth, mainly for brawling with others of their kind, and large eyes glowing white. This fish also has four tailfins, two of which are protruding from the sides of the tail. Despite this impractical-looking tail, this fish is relatively fast.

Biological Traits

While male Deep Koi have larger and more flexible tail fins, females are noticeably larger in size, thought to be related to how large and tough this species' eggs are.

Genetics and Reproduction

Male Deep Koi have a habit of attempting to mate as soon as they meet a female out in the open. They'll put on a brief display with their four tailfins, sometimes putting on flirtatious behavior as an added effect. If they are not accepted, they'll usually wander off and try their luck with other Deep Koi. The Deep Koi's eggs are laid half-buried in the sand, and have fairly tough outer shells.

Growth Rate & Stages

Baby Deep Koi will have to swim their way out of the sand when they hatch, using their powerful tails to escape their siblings. From then on, they'll spend time on their own, searching the sands for edible plants or small creatures crawling on the seabed. Their small sizes will deter most predators from trying to eat them, but it also means they are completely unable to escape the pull of a sinkhole.

Ecology and Habitats

Deep Koi live in the Dunes, and they live very solitary lifestyles. It's common for some individuals to never meet more than two other members of their species in their lifetimes, and they almost never cooperate when they do meet. These fish spend most of their time simply traveling in search of food and mates.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Deep Koi feed on clouds of plankton, and the Dune Bush. They are very protective of their meals, and can start fights with other Deep Koi over who gets their share.

Biological Cycle

Deep Koi scales seem to shed a lot, as particularly large piles of shed scales have been found near rocks and large groups of edible plants.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

The Deep Koi's eyesight is very good, and it is what it relies on most to get around in its habitat. Its hearing and smell are much less useful to the creature, and is one of its main weak points.
