Crescentfin Fish

A large social omnivore, generally adopting a migratory lifestyle. They are most well known for their ability to produce electricity, and redirect it in nearly any direction for vast distances. They heavily rely on their electricity for hunting and self defense, but it usually requires precise blows to be effective against anything, and they most likely are able to use it only once in a while.

Basic Information

Anatomy

These fish have streamlined scaly bodies with a tapered end, and compact faces with large glowing eyes, as well as a hard beak hiding dagger-like teeth. Their fins mirror each other on either side of the body, forming notable crescent shapes. The tail fin also takes up most of the tail.

Genetics and Reproduction

When these fish mate, they'll often attempt to engage with each other, and try to impress each other with their agility and body shape. When they interact, they also send harmless electrical pulses to their partner as attempts to sway them over, to show their skill with their supernatural ability. If they are attracted to one another, they'll mate, and give birth to several live young, and the parents will invest heavily into making sure the young are raised correctly.

Growth Rate & Stages

Newborn Crescentfins are built with very round bodies, and small fins. Their electrical pulses will be completely all over the place, albeit relatively harmless, and the parents will watch over them wherever they are until they can control their ability. The youth often show high sociality with their siblings, some having been seen playing games with their electricity. As adults, they either stick with their family, or live off on their own to find a mate, sometimes accompanied by their siblings.

Ecology and Habitats

Crescentfin Fish only live in the Fields, traveling wherever they can. They are indifferent to the various different environments of the Ash Fields, having been seen surviving well in the wide open areas, and in the extreme mountain regions. These creatures will often pick up objects on the seabed with their beak, and destroy them with their electrical shocks, thought to be done simply for fun.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Crescentfin Fish will eat almost anything, but favor Polyweeds, Spinapterids, and Brine Swimmers for a meal. They prefer to continually chase their prey to wear them out, before shooting a bolt of electricity to stun them, allowing them to make the killing blow with their beak.

Biological Cycle

Older individuals will have comparatively weak electrical shocks, and will stay this way for the rest of their lives. Some need the protection of other Crescentfins just to survive a little longer.

Additional Information

Social Structure

When Crescentfins meet each other, they'll more often than not stick around for each other's company. Some socialize to see if they can find a mate, while others try to join hunting parties. These hunting parties are sometimes formed when several Crescentfins decide to stick together to survive, and they work together to chase down prey and stun them with an electrical shock. Sometimes, these groups can be scattered if a big enough threat comes to challenge them for food.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Crescentfins have four large eyes, which they rely on most often to get around their environment. It has been theorized that they can sense electrical signals in the water to some extent, though this has yet to be confirmed.

History

This species is thought to have had encounters with Cave Stalkers in the past, when they first inhabited the Ash Fields. With the fish's high intelligence, the Cave Stalkers could've trained them to act as companions, or the fish could've committed violence against the Cave Stalkers when feeling threatened by them. Another possibility is that Cave Stalkers hunted them in order to somehow use their electrical abilities, but to no avail, which would explain their low population.
