Arachne

Basic Information

Anatomy

Arachne are half-humanoid spider hybrids, with their lower body resembling that of a large eight-legged spider, belonging to their arachne parent, and the upper body resembling their non-Arachne parent, whether they be human, elf, dwarf, orc, or another. Their spider’s half retains the attributes of the species of spider they belong to.

Biological Traits

A large, half-humaniod, and half-spider creature. Arachne are unique, and can reproduce both asexually and sexually. There are two sexes, regardless of their status as a hybrid. Commonly found arachne sub-species includes wolf spiders, jumping spiders, and widow spiders. Arachne are much more likely to be female at birth, giving the impression that all arachne are female when in reality male arachne are simply much rarer.

Growth Rate & Stages

Arachne, much like spiders, mature quickly, becoming adults at the age of 2 or 3 and having lifespans comparable to humans.

Ecology and Habitats

Preferring warmer climates, arachne can be found in abundance in the warmer parts of the word. They have a particular fondness for tropical or sub-tropical environments, and thrive in dense rain-forests.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Arachne can omnivorous, but primarily rely on fresh meat to survive. Hunting methods vary depending on the type of arachnid they resemble.

Biological Cycle

Until maturity, they shed their lower half every six months. The process is uncomfortable, and leaves them quite drained - and vulnerable. Once they reach maturity, they only shed once a year.

Additional Information

Social Structure

When a group of Arachne gather, they typically are led by an alpha female. However, as they are mostly solitary, interactions between the two sexes are rare, and only occur when mating season begins. Pure-bred arachne are born between two arachne parents or a humanoid being graced/cursed with the power of a spider goddess, while the more commonly found “hybrid” Arachne are born between an Arachne and a non-Arachne humanoid. Reproduction between two arachne is similar to that of any spider species - fast and (on the male side) extraordinarily dangerous. If the male is successful, he will have impregnated the female - if not, he will be dead. Conversely, when an arachne of either sex is interested in a non-arachne partner, they will defend them to their dying breathe.

Uses, Products & Exploitation

The silk from Arachne are well-known to be incredibly strong and is used to create clothing, and even some types of armor.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Typically tropical and subtropical zones - Arachne do not do well in extreme cold, though they can survive in hot climates.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Arachne have exceptional hearing, sight, are exceptionally intelligent, and extremely fast. They are exceptionally strong, and inherently persuasive. Many species have a variety of potent venoms used to bring down their prey quickly. Others rely on speed and stealth to quickly kill their prey. Depending on their non-arachne parent, they may be gifted in more ways. For example, an elf arachne might be talented in magick, or a dwarf-arachne might have exceptional strength and stamina.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

Arachne claim a wide variety of names, usually pertaining to the non-arachne parent they belonged to, while the pure-bred arachne usually refer to each other in their arachnid tongue, comprised of soft clicks and chirps, with no actual meaning in Common. Pure-bred arachne are thus usually given nicknames by the other races in common.

Average Height
Arachne can be up to 7-8 feet tall and almost as wide. Males are often slightly smaller in size, but may be more colorful.
Body Tint, Colouring and Marking
Coloration and markings on an arachne are quite diverse. The lower part of the body often reflects their spider heritage, which means that they may have markings that resemble any type of arachnid. The same is true with their upper half - depending on parentage, the humanoid half will take on qualities of their parent.
