Dire Bat
Dire Bat is exactly what it says on the tin can. It is a certainly a bat, it is a mammalian creature with large wings made of flesh that allow it to take flight. It also utilizes smell and echo location to navigate the world when it is darker, as their eyesight isn't perfect. It mostly feeds on large juicy fruit, but occasionally will have a carnivorous meal should the situation be dire enough.
Moving on over to the dire portion, this creature is significantly larger than its typical counterparts. These boys grow up to at least an 8 foot wing span, large enough and strong enough to carry passengers. What little fur they have is centered around the neck, around the little fingers poking out from the tips of their wings, and down the belly around the bottom. They come in dark colors, blacks and browns, with the occasional spotted pattern appearing. Their ears stand tall on their head, almost forming a cone shape when perked up at the top of their heads, incredible at picking up even the slightest sound or heartbeat from hundreds of yards away. Dire bats have developed their own level of super sonic emissions, ones that even evade other animals with impeccable hearing. It hits at such a particular frequency, that when angered, Dire bats can choose to amplify their sonic waves at a particular angle and frequency such that it causes damage and can shatter fragile materials. Their eyes range from blue to red to dark dark green, with the most common being purple eyes. At particular joints and along the middle of their snout up over their head, bone-like protrusions give them a more deadly and severe look.
Dire bats hold a specific position as working animals. They are native to the island of Berico, but in the annexation of the kingdom, also were brought over and have created small pockets of populations in Promera. Though they occur naturally in mountainous areas, the only settlement to successfully domestic them are the subterranean people of Cravenedge. From there, they are also found in the Ibu Range and Setraas Highlands. Though, nowadays, Dire Bats are most commonly found being used by the air teams of the Steelfeathers. A special force in the king's army, they glide on the back and assault from above. Clad in the blues and greens of the kingdom, they strike fear into the hearts of ground-dwellers.
