Tobias Winterbane

Tobias Winterbane was one of the founding settlers of Milestone, and in actual fact the person who shipped over with the Altar of Tarl in the temple. He was Milestone's first mayor, and also the victim of Milestone's first horrific murder.   Tobias spent five years building the temple and town hall, met the love of his life, Iryna Twilight. They wed the morning after the first mayoral election.   Seven years later, and Milestone was not doing well. The crops were blighting, if they grew at all, and sickness and starvation was threatening the population, who looked to their Mayor to find a solution.   Rumours were going around that all these strange issues were the work of one person, an evil, mysterious woman who live deep in the forest to the North. Milestone gathered all their riches together, and Tobias set off to find and meet with the woman, in order to negotiate a solution.   Four weeks later, Tobias came back -quiet and distracted. Apparently he had found the woman, who freely admitted to causing Milestone's problems and they had negotiated a deal.   Mere days after Tobias returned to Milestone, the blight subsided and the sickness disappeared. Tobias was a changed man, spending hours every day in his mayoral office alone, instead of spending the day among the people of Milestone -something he was known for.   Nearly thirteen years after his journey, as the Winterbane family was sitting down for dinner in their home, when their daughter Lilith suddenly took the carving knife from the dinner table, quickly and viciously slit her father's throat. He bled to death in seconds. Iryna, shocked and incoherent, ran out of the room to fetch help. When the guard open the door a few minutes later, they found Lilith calmly eating her dinner next to the corpse of her father.   The body of Tobias was taken to the Temple of Tarl, where it lay in state until it was buried three days later. Lilith was taken to the guard house cells, never speaking a word and never resisting.   The morning after Tobias's funeral, one of the farmers discovered his grave had been opened, apparently from the inside, with muddy tracks leading into the forest. Lilith was discovered to have simply disappeared from her cell, leaving no trace behind.   It is said Iryna went mad then, spent years pacing the edge of the forest at night, waiting for her family to return. She, too was discovered dead after a particularly cold night.
