Thalassomorph

The imum, commonly known as thalassomorphs, are an extremely alien species to the rest of Tellus, closer related to mollusks than any other of the intelligent species; they dwell in the far depths of the Tellurian oceans, around two thousand metres down, where no other intelligent creatures can go.
Imum had begun to reach a notable level of intelligence in the very early stages of life's development on Tellus, but their evolution was massively jumpstarted upon the introduction of the mist, which introduced vastly greater evolutionary pressures onto them, allowing them to become so advanced so quickly. The body of a thalassomorph, or at least what you might see of it, is actually a bio-suit carapace surrounding their true form, which is hidden within. These chitinous bio-suits are crafted for them at birth by their parents, which is an expression of art among their kind. With recent technological developments, these suits will sometimes incorporate advanced materials, gathered or made by the parents; sometimes, if the family is especially important or wealthy, they will even make deals with the surface species to have their great craftsmen make steel or other advanced metal suits for their children.
The imum have a special connection with the esoteric deity, Auga, the eye of the sea, giving them magical abilities. The extent of this connection is unknown.
While imum are capable of living out of water, they rarely have any desire, nor need, to do so; they are reclusive by nature, and most of them would much prefer to introduce the surface species' to their home, rather than them be introduced to theirs, though this is quite difficult to do.

Thalassomorph

Ability Scores: Choose any +2; choose any other +1
Size: Small/Medium
Speed: 30ft, swimming speed equal to walking speed

Age: Thalassomorphs mature after 2 years, after which they are placed within their carapace, which they attach to and incorporate into themselves for the rest of their lives, which last around 60 years.
Alignment: Thalassomorphs tend towards no particular alignment
Size: Depending on the size and shape of your construction, you can choose to be small or medium
Filtering Membranes: You can breathe in both air and water.
Depth-Born: You are acclimatised to the deep, crushing cold of the ocean. You have resistance to cold damage and take no harmful effects from being submerged up to 3000 metres underwater, or any equivalent pressure.
Auga's Eye: You know the chill touch cantrip; when cast this way, the symbol of a cuttlefish's eye appears on the target, in place of a hand. Once you reach 3rd level, you can cast the cause fear spell at 2nd level once per long rest. Once you reach 5th level, you can cast the blindness/deafness spell once per long rest, however, you must choose the blindness effect. Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells when you cast them with this trait (choose when you select this species).
Sonar: You have sound-based blindsight up to a range of 15ft out of water, however, in water, this blindsight extends to 60ft, as you are adapted to produce inaudibly low vibrations that allow you to see in the pitch black depths. If your ability to produce or hear sound is lost, this blindsight is nullified
Crafted Carapace: When you aren't wearing armor, your base AC is 14 + your Dexterity modifier. You can use your natural armor to determine your AC if the armor you wear would leave you with a lower AC. A shield's benefits apply as normal while you use your natural armor.
Languages: You can speak, read and write one common language and Imum.
