The Eight Calendar

The world of Mater (of which The Manylands is a part) has been in existence for much longer than even its oldest denizens. Some scholars and palaeontologists have tried to measure how far back life in Mater can be traced, but even now it is still unclear how long The Age of Legend (The First Age) was.   This did not stop the Priesthood of The Eight. however. During The Age of War (The Second Age), senior clergy devised The Eight Calendar - the first of its kind, and now appropriated across the Manylands and beyond, even by those who don't follow The Eight.

Manifestation

The Eight Calendar pivots, unsurprisingly, around the Eight gods, but also the number 8 itself. As such, there are 24 hours in a day (which, neatly, is divisible by 8), and a week comprises of eight days, named as follows:
Day Number 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
Day Name Oneday Twoday Threeday Fourday Fiveday Sixday Sevenday Eightday
Particularly in countries where The Eight is the principal religion, Eightday is considered a religious day of rest. It is common for shops not to open, and businesses not to operate on this day. Followers of the Dragon Gods, however, consider Sevenday to be the true day of rest, though they are much less common - only Rachir implements this in its society.   There are 8 months in a year, which are also named after The Eight gods. There are 4 seasons [the same as in real life], and each month is 40 days long, making a year 320 days (all, again, being divisible by 8). The months are named as follows:
Month Number 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
Month Name Sparken Ominar Ellushan Agrafar Grizetten Festiver Ruushen Declunner
Season Spring Spring Summer Summer Autumn Autumn Winter Winter
The true age of Mater is still debated, since the length of The Age of Legend (The First Age) is still unknown. The calendar was only created during The Age of War (The Second Age), which conveniently started when records began. A general consensus is that The Age of Legend must have been around 1000 years. The Age of War lasted 555 years, with today's Age of Reason (The Third Age) currently in it's 128th year.   This makes the year, debatably, 1683. However, to avoid scrutiny, debate and confusion, the year has the Age added to it. Therefore, it is entirely correct that the current year is 3:128 - meaning Year 128 of the 3rd Age.   Below is a full guide to The Eight Calendar and its derivatives:
Months Weeks Days Hours
1 Year 8 [40] [320] [7680]
1 Month * 5 [40] [960]
1 Week * * 8 [192]
1 Day * * * 24
An example date, as written, would be: Fourday 35th Ominar, 3:128
Type
Metaphysical, Divine
This calendar is a guide to time in The Manylands and the entirety of Mater. It shares some similarities to our world, but with some quite obvious differences. If you run a campaign in The Manylands, it is highly recommended that you use this calendar to add to the depth and lore of the world.
