Provincian Rider

The highland state of Provincia is home to several Clans, but do not engage in petty squabbles like the Liege Lords in The Crow Flies. Provincian Clans devote most of their time and resources to defending their territory from the Orcs of Orruskan, and spend the rest rearing horses and other rideable mounts, which they value above all else, producing arguably the best horses in all of the Manylands. Since you could walk, you could ride, and as such have a way with steeds that others, outside of your Clan, simply can’t understand. But why did you leave? Did you steal a Clan elder’s horse? Was your first steed killed in an Orc raid, forcing you to seek another? Did your dealings with another Clan go sour? Or are you seeking fame and repute for yourself and your Clan outside of your ancestral home?   Skill Proficiencies: Animal Handling, Nature   Tool Proficiencies: one type of musical instrument, one type of tools (choose from one set of Artisan’s tools, Herbalism kit, or Poisoner’s kit)   Languages: one of your choice   Equipment: Tribal Tattoos indicative of your Clan, a hunting trap, a Riding Horse (or Giant Goat if character is a Dwarf) with riding saddle, bit and bridle, and 2 days of feed in a saddlebag, a set of common clothes, and a belt pouch containing 10gp.   Feature: Natural Analysis – your years raising horses have allowed you to quickly and easily assess all mounts you come across. Using an action, you can visually assess a creature and, subject to passing an Intelligence (Nature) check, learn its general strength, condition and one ailment affecting it. If the target is a horse, or other mount, you can receive this information via sight, without using an action.   Variant: Provincian Champion – although famed as “Horse Lords”, not all Provincians ride into battle. You have made yourself known as a famed fighter, showing your skills in public fights to both entertain and protect your Clan. Your exploits may not have granted you a mount, but you sure know how to defeat one.   NOTE: switch Animal Handling to Performance, and switch mount and associated items with one tool set of your choice (one set of Artisan’s tools, Herbalism kit or Poisoner’s kit), and upgrade one of your starting weapons to a silvered weapon.
