Imperial Legionnaire
The Empire of Fallen Stars has existed as far back as you remember, and the Legionnaires are one of the reasons the Empire has endured so long. But the life of the legionnaire is no casual job, it’s a life sentence, making you a servant of the Empire for life, until you are granted retirement or death in battle. Being a Legionnaire takes you away from heart and home for years at a time on duty, guarding the realm from outside threats, including the corsairs of the Pirate Isles and whatever still lies in Kothar. On the edges of the Empire, your training is your best friend, utilising your steel mirror to signal to allies, and your combat prowess on your enemies. Has your service lead you further afield from the Empire? Have you personally been intrusted with an important mission? Or have you had enough of military rigour, risking the death penalty to stow away and seek a better life for yourself, away from the mindless view of a foot-soldier?
Skill Proficiencies: Athletics, Survival
Tool Proficiencies: one type of gaming set, vehicles (land)
Languages: Elvish (or one other if known)
Equipment: an insignia of rank, a steel mirror, a pack of cards or set of dice, a token from your family or lover, a set of common clothes, and a belt pouch containing 15gp.
Feature: Rigorous Training – as a Legionnaire of the Empire of Fallen Stars, you have undertaken intensive combat training for many years, allowing you to realise your full potential in combat. You know one manoeuvre of your choice from the Battle Master archetype in the Fighter class. If the manoeuvre requires your target to make a saving throw, the DC equals 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Strength or Dexterity modifier (your choice). If you already have superiority dice, this background grants you one more; otherwise you have one superiority dice (one d6) to fuel your manoeuvres, expending it when you use it. This can be regained when you finish a short or long rest.
