Brukon Rumbleguts (a.k.a. Brukon Ree)

Brukon Rumbleguts Ree was born into the wealthy and successful Rumbleguts Dwarf merchant family, a longstanding clan of merchants who have risen to pre-eminence in Runedar. As the scion of such a successfully family, Brukon wanted for nothing throughout his early life, and enjoyed essentially whatever pleasure and luxury he could want as he grew and received training to take his place in the clan’s businesses, as was tradition. Despite his many advantages Brukon was not a particularly cruel dwarf, but he did enjoy a good time and was not a particularly cerebral individual, having more the kind of dull and slightly physical sense of humour that you might associate with perhaps a rugby team, or the less mean-spirited kind of Oxford dining club. And so, his youth was spent living life to the fullest of a “public baths-worth of beer alongside 14 course meals” sort of variety.   As a result of his generally innocent and suffering-deficient upbringing, when Brukon did eventually take up a role in one of his family’s businesses in the Docks Quarter (a rougher end of the city), he was shocked at the suffering he was, for the first time in his life, exposed to. A sensitive dwarf whose previous philosophical contemplations had mostly been focused on the comparative merits of whisky and brandy, he was no more able to understand a life spent in poverty and penury than he was quantum mechanics or the Kardashev scale. But the more he learned, the more confused he became. How could those whose lives were spent in such drudgery face up to each new day? What did it make him, to have wanted for nothing and to have wasted his family’s wealth on blameless excess while others toiled for scraps? Where was the justice that he had always been told existed in his own, unearned riches contrasted with the abject poverty he saw before him? If the Great Eight were the omnipotent benevolent force they were depicted as, then why weren’t the poor and the meek looked after? How on earth could the beggars he walked past each day on the way to the office stand being denied the pleasure of tea and crumpets?   The doubt and confusion Brukon felt as he saw the world in a new and deeply discomfiting way plagued him relentlessly, distracting him and making him poor company at drinking sessions with his cousins and peers. He began to ask questions of learned members of his community, seeking to understand how he could rid himself of this burden, the pain of the knowledge he had acquired. One night, when his attempts to drink away his protesting conscience were in a particularly advanced state, Brukon overheard one of the older members of his gentleman’s club remarking that they had heard of an elixir, a draft of liquor of magical power that would grant those who drank it everlasting inner peace – The Decanter of Serenity. They also suggested that the best place to find more information about this mystical concoction would be the monks of the Barkfang Monastery, whose mystical knowledge presumably included distilling and brewing techniques which could harness the cosmic knowledge of the ancients. That night, Brukon cashed out his trust fund, bought himself what he assumed were probably decent travelling clothes, and left for the monastery.   Some bedraggled, uncomfortable and frequently damp weeks later (because he got lost in the mountains on more than one occasion), Brukon arrived and joined the Barkfang Monastery, his focus on understanding suffering now also taking on a distinct note of “so I can stop experiencing so much of it please”. His time as a monk was, on the whole, a success, for he was unlearned (and, to most, seemingly simple) but not, in fact, foolish. He began to appreciate the importance of balance, of The Light and The Dark and their innately omnipresent, cyclical and symbiotic nature, as well as how comfortable actual beds had been, once upon a time. But, after some time studying, he realised that the expansion of his horizons had not quelled his desire to achieve fulfilment. He attended the head of the monastery, Abbot Grash Oreh-tar, and explained his dilemma. He was instructed to head out, into the world, to pursue balance and perhaps discover the secret truth which would satisfy him. And also so he would stop organising games of poker with his fellow initiates…   Brukon’s sense of justice has naturally lead him to the Rachgarurt Mountains, the natural border between The Dragonborn Kingdom of Rachir and The Burakrin Republic. The Dragonborn of Burakrin are currently treated as second-class citizens, required to carry identification to prove they aren’t from Rachir, and this doesn’t sit right with the Dwarf. Also, there’s a very nice tavern just down the road from there, and it’s been a while since he gave owner Jakben Winklebottom his patronage…
