Verén the Butler

Entering the manor, you don't  get very far before you hear shuffling in the ceiling above you. Within moments, you see a short balding man in a dark cloak and well-tailored suit coming down the stairs. He shuffles his feet behind him as he walks, which has the effect of keeping his shoes exceedingly clean.   As he approaches, you can see the liver spots underneath his wispy grey hair and the somber expression plastered to his face. He barely even acknowledges the strange look of your group, only straightening his collar absent-mindedly as he begins to speak in a croak:   "I am sorry to report that if you were here to speak to Lord Kilas, that he is currently..." He trails off as he looks at the door for a moment, then resumes, "...currently indisposed. He is away on a hunting trip, in fact, and will not return for some time." He bows his head submissively. "I hope this does not impede your business too much, and that you will be able to wait for his return...?"

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Verén is an older gentleman, and the wear and tear of the decades has begun to show. He moves with a shuffling gait now, his knees too swollen to move painlessly. His eyes have started to go, and his hands shake a little from time to time. It is for these reasons that Jonitan Kilas left him behind; his other butler has been more useful.

Physical quirks

Verén has a variety of small physical ticks that have only worsened in his old age:
  • His hands shake a little when they are not holding something, although it is nearly imperceptible to someone not actively checking for it;
  • He shuffles his feet absent-mindedly whenever he is talking, scuffing any marks off of his shoes; and
  • Every once in a while, he will gulp loudly and interrupt himself, taking a moment to regain composure.

Apparel & Accessories

Verén sticks to the traditional black cloak and suit attire of the butlers of Kilas Manor. He has never been seen without this suit on, leaving some to wonder whether he has ever changed out of it.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Verén has been in service to the Kilas family since he was a young boy. Like many indentured servants of his kind, he has seen very little of the world beyond the manor. His only frame of reference for the outside world has been what he has read in the main library and what Jonitan Kilas and his parents have told him about what exists beyond the small hamlet.   Recently, he has learned about Jonitan Kilas's involvement with a local mage by the name of Lakénir Vargas. Believing Lakénir to simply being invited to satisfy Lord Kilas's curiosity about the religion of the Old Ways, Verén didn't pay the mage much mind. He did, however, meet some of the more rough-and-tumble folk of the main town that Lord Kilas had brought to the manor for various reasons - enough to be suspicious of them.   When Lord Kilas went on his recent hunting trip, he asked Verén to keep his dealings with Lakénir and the rough-housers secret. He then essentially abandoned him to his own devices, only leaving one of his cooks behind for company. Verén has done an admirable job of keeping others away.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Verén's main motivation is to serve the Kilas family. This is not only a requirement as a servant, but a mantra that he lives by; he would gladly give his life to serve Jonitan Kilas in any way.

Savvies & Ineptitudes

The number of things that he is bad at has increased as time passed, leaving him with very few things he is good at:
  • A strong sense of detail and cleanliness that has lent itself well to his profession;
  • A loyalty and tact that has also been of great use; and
  • An increasing incapability to complete the simple tasks posed by Jonitan and the rest of his retinue.

Likes & Dislikes

  • Decorum is very important to Verén, and he will strongly dislike anyone who demonstrates a lack of politeness in his presence;
  • He enjoys following people and waiting on them, sometimes even to a creepy degree. He has been known to take books out of people's hands to see what they are reading; and
  • He detests animals and beasts, preferring to hide if any appear near him.

Social

Family Ties

Verén does have a wife who works in the kitchens of the manor, as well as two young boys that work in the nearby orchards. He doesn't get much of an opportunity to see them except when he isn't working, which is only at night and only very briefly. It pains him to see them grow up without him, but he has very little choice in the matter.

Social Aptitude

Verén has gotten more uncomfortable in social situations as time has gotten on. His age and his lack of connection to the runnings of the household has become more clear with time, meaning he doesn't get much of an opportunity to speak as he once did. However, he is still interested and somewhat comfortable in these spaces; the biggest barrier is that he doesn't have much to say nowadays.

Speech

His voice has become worn from decades of use, causing his voice to more closely resemble a croak than a voice. He often stops and lingers on words for a moment, although this is more of a symptom of his mind worsening than a purposeful choice.
