Greenwitch

Greenwitch was an independent city-state in within the Verpras Glade of eastern Rendeh that stood during the end of the Third Age. The city itself was housed on and in the ancient boughs and bark of a vast and verdant sylvan tree with roots as thick as watchtowers, and branches as long as small rivers. It was a shining example of unity, as otherwise hostile races had worked together to carve out their own independent community away from the Matlunn King's rule.   Its wide streets atop the thick branches were brightly lit by the ever-glowing veins of the tree in the day's twilight and was home to thousands before its destruction in The First New Moon of Autumn's Cusp, 2812 at the hands of the archlich, Acererak, and his subservient dracolich.   Ancient ruins have since opened up after the forest's destruction revealing more information about the mysterious organization of the Deep Dreamers and their origins. One such ruin beneath the rooted ground was a crypt called the "The Hollow Temple Forgotten in Unaccountable Time and Inescapable Void" (translated).   It was made up of multiple sections, with the base of the tree making the primary shipping areas where large cranes and constructs lifted goods and people as well as received travels and returning citizens all the way up to the solar gardens, the seat of power shared with the other council members by the elected chancellor.

Demographics

The city-state of Greenwitch's native population of half-elven settlers made the location a popular spot for the discriminated, such as those of the orc race and those of mixed-species heritage looking for a place to take their families or find meaningful work.   For that reason, there were many half-elves and half-dwarves who lived among the branches of the great tree who enjoyed a previously unprecedented level of tolerance and opportunity.   As for the workers of the city, there were a considerable number of creatives and artisans who subscribed to the idea that Greenwitch was a mystical place where one could find limitless inspiration. For this reason, a great number of poets, playwrights, carpenters, sculptors, architects, musicians, artists, and all manner of craftspeople with enough wealth took pilgrimages to Greenwitch, and, more often than not, they stayed. This was also why the city was considered a bastion for those of the romantic mindset and a sanctuary for artists of all kinds.

Government

The government of Greenwitch was uniquely fitting for the people of the city. The responsibility of rulership was not passed down from a monarch of a particular bloodline, but by a council of representatives that directly interacted with the populace on a personal level.   The council was comprised of five individuals: a representative of the League of Arcane Study, the Crafter's Guild, the Builder's Guild, The Caravan Guild, and the Master of the Deep Dreamer's Enclave.   Each individual attempted to balance the others in order to keep the day-to-day minutia of running the city simple, and a great deal of autonomy was offered to each representative who in turn wielded a great deal of power. Despite this, there were very few instances of infighting over the centuries of council governance, and if one of the representatives seemed to be making a grab for power, as we had seen in 2777 with the Guild Leader Adon Versimillion's attempt to seize power, the Master of the Deep Dreamers would use everything within their secretive organization's power to restore order.

Infrastructure

Greenwitch was an oddity in that it is rather outdated in comparison to how many other cities were run. Many branches and districts operated off of a trade system of currency and seemed to abandon enterprising or entrepreneurial ideas shared by many of the Third Age. While it was a large hub for trade both by maritime transportation and by land, the people of the city seemed to enjoy the simplicity of life there, and would often seem odd by travelers for a number of reasons.   Travel around the incredibly vast tree was conducted by centipede-like creatures called bark-chewers. These insects were hundreds of feet of skittering legs and midnight black carapace, and their one-half foot thick bodies were perfect for sitting on if the rider knew the path the beast wished to take. They operated with a drone-like intelligence, with their paths easily mapped out and rarely ever changing.
