Scientists and Engineers of Dartil

Driven by a desire to improve the lives of their fellow man without relying on magic, scientist and engineers of Dartil took inspiration from the rich body of knowledge developed by the dwarves and gnomes on Astoric and set out to open their own schools. In the beginning their main motivator was a desire to tap into the natural laws of the universe and bring about something that magic couldn't do; cheap and readily available solutions to common problems. This approach worked well for a while and natural sciences proved to be a great boon to people of the world, but this rivalry was short lived. After achieving their first few successes and receiving recognition and respect, the scientist and engineers were approached by people versed in ways of magic and offered a partnership. This union proved to be very beneficial to everyone. Some of the greatest accomplishments were made from this collaboration, like the trains, airships, magic powered cargo ships etc.

Once they earn their qualifications, the rookie scientist/engineers join a research and development institution or work a similar job in the private sector for successful entrepreneurs and businessmen who can afford their services. Depending on the job performance and years spent in higher education, these people can go from bachelor degrees and entry level positions to doctorates and top ranks in their respective institutions, places of employment.

There are some exceptions, every now and then a particularly brilliant scientist or an engineer emerges and becomes famous for their work, but those are few and far between.

Perception

Purpose

Scientist and engineers of Dartil work on solving problems in a cheaper and more available way then magic. Due to their reliance on natural laws only, their inventions were able to bring up everyone, including the people who had less magical ability or access to these talented individuals. One of the largest contributions these people made to society was in the area of medicine, transportation and industry, which made people richer, healthier and more free to enjoy life.

Social Status

These intelligent people are seen as examples of some of the most noble traits of humanity. Their drive for knowledge and achievement inspires the general populace. Although very few are known by name, people with these titles are respected even by the upper classes of society.

Demographics

Very few people have the aptitude and the drive to educate themselves enough to earn a title of an engineer or a scientist. There are roughly seven to eight times less wizards then these highly trained people which is part of the reason why they are so well paid and respected.

History

Science and engineering developed alongside magic from the very beginning, but for a long time, magic was more used due to its ability to produce instant results in many situations. After the invention of the printing press and emergence of a widespread scientific community in the 16th century, study of natural laws took off. When the Third Period began in Dartil, magic was the primary service that helped the broken nations get back on their feet, but after a little while the curious and driven part of society joined the movement to better understand the natural world and started training the first scientists and engineers near the end of the 1500s.
