Draegon

Basic Information

Anatomy

While the general anatomy of draegons is consistent, the morphology of each individual seems to have been dramatically different. It was unclear even then if this was an expression of individual development, or if there was variant sub-species of draegons that displayed variations in physical or even intellectual characteristics.    In general, draegons were typically quadruped reptiles of massive stature and strength, typically with large wings extending from their back or arms that permitted them to fly short or long distances.   Variations on this morphology are present in enough stories to be ruled out as simple deviations in story over the centuries.

Additional Information

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Draegons ruled over every corner of Altwaus, striking terror into the heart of the first alvain. The alvain who were created before the fall of the dragons speak rarely about those dark days, however, the stories that survive are consistent in telling how the draegon overlook the entirety of the continent and it's surrounding islands - forcing the young alvain species to face their hunters head on, as there was nowhere for them to run.

Average Intelligence

While not mindless creatures, the vast majority of draegons cared little for pursuits outside of satisfying the needs and desires of their flesh. While stories exist of draegons being capable of speaking, it is nearly impossible to determine how much of these stories are true; only the surviving alvain from the previous age know for certain.

Symbiotic and Parasitic organisms

Some stories tell of smaller, lesser-dragons, that served their larger cousins as subservient species. This stories are rare enough to cast some doubt on the accuracy of these tales, as the stories that persist most tell of draegons as solitary and independent creatures.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

The stories that exist give draegons the names given to them by their alvain enemies, which are names spoken about them in hushed whispers around tribal campfires in The Alvain Dialect of The Ancient Language.   If draegons kept names for themselves and amongst their species these names have been lost to current knowledge.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Dominant predators of air, land, and sea - draegons preyed upon the lesser species of Altwaus, toying with them, terrorizing them, and consuming their flesh to satisfy their hunger.

Immortal
Conservation Status
Following their defeat by the Alvain, the remaining Draegon were driven out of Altwaus, never to be seen again. While rumors persist to this day of Draegon sightings in Altwaus, no sighting has ever been credibly confirmed, and Draegons exist now only in legend and bones.
Body Tint, Colouring and Marking
Draegon came in colorations of every sort and variety. While records are unclear of just how many draegon were present in altwaus, the stories that survive today tell of massive winged beasts of black and red scales that dominated entire horizons with their presence, and slinking serpents of silver and blue that chased down prey like skyborne rivers.
