Halvdøden hospitals and sur-services

Surnatural creatures have a right to health care too.

The medical field adapts

Supernatural creatures, or halvdøden, exist all around the world nowadays. I’ve always managed to meet a few by inadvertence everywhere I went. Every continent, every country and every city bigger than ten thousand citizens has at least one or two species. Most of the smaller town have some too, but that’s not relevant to our subject here.   What is relevant to our subject, is that most halvdøden simply live around the humans, among them, and with them ; without their knowledge of course (nobody wants to create a panic by breaking the laws of the Underworld and revealing its existence). As a result of that fact, most of the cities did adapt to them over time : adapted to their needs and way of life. The medical field is no exception to this rule. Therefore, in most cities, you’ll find at least one hospital has a secret part reserved for supernatural creatures, a speciality called the sur-services. Several in the bigger ones.

If you're in need of medical assistance, feel free to ask around for the biggest hospital in the city you're in, and you will usually be able get help there.

Paris, France

Let’s take an example. I’ve recently been to Paris (for confidential reasons). I found there a lot (and I do mean a lot) of halvdøden around town. And since they are part human, accidents tend to happen to them just like they would happen to any ordinary human ; sometimes even more often depending of the species. (Let’s take note here that the more they are prone to violence by nature, the more they tend to need hospitals, especially when healing is not part of their natural gifts.)   Nowadays, several hospitals in Paris or in the suburbs are now known to welcome halvdøden. The most famous among them, which also happens to be the biggest hospital in Paris is “la Pitié-Salpêtrière” hospital, with no less than ninety buildings and ten specialities opened to the public.   On the public front, la Pitié is a normal hospital. But what humans obviously don’t know is that the hospital is even bigger than they would expect. Because there are buildings inside the compound that are dedicated to halvdøden, with special rooms and separate entries, with underground tunnels and access. If the hospital announces ten specialities, one of these is actually separated in two : the normal speciality the title implies, and the sur-services, run by supernatural creatures for surnatural supernatural creatures. In that hospital specifically it is situated in one of the most isolated buildings, and considered the treatment zone for infectious sickness, with restricted access for standard personnel, of course. The infectious humans are still treated, of course, but most of the building is dedicated to surnaturel creatures. That is the trick most hospital use in most eastern countries. It’s easy to survey, easy to install, and even curious people rarely go to what they believe to be a contaminated place.

Cities from around the world

In the cities from countries that are less developed, I’ve learned that more often than not the part for halvdøden doesn’t need to be hidden. Sadly this is the consequence of poverty and very little resources. But since the system is often less structured, and less observed and regulated, one part is easily overlooked, especially when there are more sick people than beds.

Attending personnel

What is generally similar in all of these places are the halvdøden who work there : mostly the sur-services are held by Warlocks and Witches, though elves and fairies often helps give a more natural edge to the treatments.
