The United Nations Interstellar Defense and International Space Command (UNIDISC)

Structure

Fleets are commanded by one central command center, based on Earth. There are also smaller, more local bases that help to coordinate operations that are spread throughout the known, human-controlled portions of the galaxy. If something happens and disrupts communications with Earth command, either through the disabling of FTL communications or an attack on Earth, these local bases will assume the responsibility of coordination and command of the fleets in their sectors.   Each fleet is then commanded by an admiral. Each ship in that fleet is controlled by a captain. Aboard each ship, there exist four "forces" that are responsible for different roles and duties. The "Army" are the basic fighting units, responsible also for weaponry and munitions. The "Navy" are primarily responsible for the upkeep and logistics of the ship, as well as ship-to-ship combat. The "Air Force" are responsible for for piloting smaller, deployable crafts, and providing air support for operations in-atmosphere. Finally, the "Marines" are special forces operators.

Culture

The culture of UNIDISC is very proud. A cooperative, almost nationalistic spirit is encouraged among the ranks, uniting all of its members under the shared banner of humanity. Group heroics, such as the actions of an entire ship or the underdog success of a squadron on a mission, are celebrated more often than individual heroics. Order and the chain of command are expected to be respected at all times; however, individuals are also encouraged to increase their merit so that they may ascend up the ranks.

Public Agenda

To fight back against the Trausnians and defend humanity. They also aim to bring stability and provide humanitarian aid to the areas affected by the war.

Assets

Hundreds of spaceships, millions of soldiers, and cutting-edge research and technology. They have the support of the entirety of Earth and its aligned worlds behind their efforts; they have near limitless resources and little concerns about budget. They also create and operate humanity's largest pool of AI constructs.

History

The roots of the idea of UNIDISC originated from a United Nations agreement that space was to be neutral territory. As a result, all excursions into space and the subsequent colonization of other worlds were of a joint, international effort. After these colonizations, it became necessary to establish a sort of emergency services, capable of aiding worlds in need on short notice. In a sense, Earth's space navy arose out of this early, coast guard-like organization.   After the first Distress Calls were intercepted from alien origin, the need for an armed interstellar peacekeeping force became apparent. Something out among the stars was attacking other species and wiping them off the map. Humanity needed to be prepared. At first, UNIDISC was formed and controlled directly by the UN assembly. However, as the organization grew, it became a sister organization of sorts, able to control and command itself only in the best interest of humanity as a whole against extraterrestrial threats.   After a period of silence, a break in the Distress Calls, it was debated in parts of the UN to disband the organization. The space navy asked for and consumed many resources, so it made sense that in times of peace, it shouldn't be active. Such calls for disbandment were quickly silenced when a UNIDISC ship on regular patrol was ambushed and destroyed by Trausnian forces. The Human-Trausnian war had begun. Since then, UNIDISC has fought valiantly to drive off the attackers and defend humankind.
