Mariner

People from the coast of the Great River, cities such as Scales and the more cosmopolitan Glory, share some cultural similarities and are collectively known as mariners.   Some weapons and armor from The Grip also show signs of having received significant mariner influence.

Culture

Culture and cultural heritage

Mariners have a long tradition as duelists. As opposed to customs from the Floodplains, single combat is not used as a method for solving disputes, but rather as training and as a measure of peak performance. Mariners are constantly seeking improvement in all aspects, and admit their overreliance on servilons and ranged weapons may leave them weak when they are caught alone in melee distance. Thus, duellists proficient in the rapier and saber are valued and admired, even if they wouldn't usually employ those skills in the rigid formations of the Stender military.

Common Dress code

Civilian clothes in the Great River Shorelands are mostly plain and utilitarian, featuring some geometrical designs at most.   Mariners traditionally wore brigandines and morion helmets for armor, a practice that heavily influenced present day Stender military uniforms. As for weaponry, they favored long and thin piercing weapons such as spears and rapiers, although later adopted sabers. Ranged armaments are very common and tend towards single fire but very potent rifles, usually outfitted with a bayonet.

Ideals

Beauty Ideals

Mariners tend toward small and nimble bodies, with long fingers. Their eyes and ears seem to be small and slightly stunted, the senses impaired. Irises are usually blue, green or grey, and hair is either black or blonde. Exceptions exist, however.

Courtship Ideals

Mariner society is strictly professional, with individuals expressing no care for romantic feelings or physical attraction. Of course, this is not how they really feel, but exteriorizing emotions is still considerably looked down upon. Courtship is performed through a long and tedious process in which the parts get to know each other and eventually deduce the other is interested, without a word on the subject ever being said.   This leads to many an anxiety-ridden evening, with one completely oblivious participant and another that tries their best to convey sexual or romantic intentions without actually talking about them.
