The College of Enchanters

The College of Enchanters is an enchantment guild based in Kingdom of Yersia that is partially funded by the Yersi crown. The College is physically located in Genti but has many guildhalls located throughout the world.

Structure

Student Ranks

The students of the College are organised into Ranks as they progress. Varied ages are found in different ranks within the student class depending on when students are enrolled. These ranks are organized in order of the materials that are hardest to enchant and work with, starting with Sand and finishing with Glass. From Wood upwards, the things made are sold and traded by the College with the students seeing increasing shares in the profits.
  • Sand: In the lowest rank, students learn how to draw basic glyphs and apply them temporarily in the air and sand. Wear undyed cloth robes.
  • Bark: Students progress to enchanting on wooden wands, shields and other wooden items. As wood is more flexible, it takes enchantment more easily. Students are introduced into the various tools of enchantment for carving and engraving. Wear dark brown robes similar to a monk.
  • Stone: Students move onto enchanting items in stone. Practically, this applies to construction. The inflexibility of stone makes it difficult to work with, as one small mistake will likely break the stone apart. Wear dyed grey robes.
  • Alloy: The second most difficult class, students learn how to forge metal and enchant it. This corresponds to enchanting weapons and armour. The sheer number of different metals and alloys means that students often spend five years or longer in Alloy. Wear silver robes.
  • Glass: The most difficult class due to the fragility of working with glass and gems. Due to the expensiveness of the material, if a student fails too much in this class, they are usually taken out of the enchanter path and given a mundane job in the running of the college. Once this rank is passed, the student graduates. Wear white robes.

Enchanters

Graduates of the Student Ranks become fully fledged Enchanters. Many of them work for years in the forges and workshops of the College, while the talented or experienced are sent forth to guildhalls. The bulk of the College population are Enchanters, and for many this is as far as their career goes.

High Enchanters

These enchanters serve as the teachers for the Student Ranks, and thus enter the sphere of management at the bottom rung. They create fewer things than regular enchanters and are usually chosen from the most intelligent and talented enchanters. They may also lead a College guildhall in one of the major cities and oversee operations there.

Royal Enchanter

A single position appointed by the leader of the Royal House of Accordi with consultation from the Senior Enchanters. This person works with with the monarch directly and leads the College. Their authority is equated to the authority of the monarch themselves, as they are considered direct agents and extensions of the monarch's rule.    The current Royal Enchanter is Felizien of Genti.

Public Agenda

The College is focused on the creation of enchanted and magical items, especially Magitech.

History

Founding

The College was founded in 469 during the Age of a Thousand Festivals by a group of high-ranking mages who had fought in the Wind War. With veteran mages returning home to face scorn and persecution, the high mage Heloise Vortiex petitioned the King for a home for the college. The King agreed and granted Heloise and her war mages a tract of land south west of the then-capital, Fumo  In exchange, Heloise promised to focus her guild on making magic palatable and useful for the masses. Heloise was a skilled enchanter, and thus named the College, and gave it its purpose. Additionally, in return for funding, the King and Heloise agreed that the College would share some of its profits and always be beholden to the Crown.    At first the College was little more than workshop, forge, kitchen and dorm room.

The Iron Age (469-842)

Through their dedication to enchantment, the College was able to make a number of breakthroughs within its first four centuries. The subsequent monarchs of the Royal House of Accordi increased the College's funding, though the college was already making huge profits from trading its enchanted items.    Over this period the College grew and expanded twenty-fold, leaving us with the modern-day palatial structure. Additionally the town of Genti sprang up around the College's walls due to the sheer amount of trade happening there.

The Magic Protection Act (831)

In 831, the monarch of Yersia enacted a new law that required all Yersi born with magic were enrolled, trained and permanently housed in the College. Failure to do so was a crime. The reason for this law is debated. Some say it was to protect the magicians themselves from persecution and isolation within Yersi society. Others disagree, citing changing attitudes, and positing that the Crown was merely interested in expanding its number of enchanters to drive more gold into the treasuries.    Additionally, enchanters were legally required to obey the College and the Crown in all matters. Running away from the College or disobeying orders were met with swift and merciless punishment. This Act is still in effect until today due to its popularity among the common folk.

The Middle Ages (842-1060)

The College continued in its growth and prominence, though its new duties of hunting down renegade mages and punishing them drove out a lot of the senior staff.    In 985, Magitech was invented at the College. These special kind of enchantments were perpetual and automated, leading into leaps in farming and labour industries. Lisquids, automatons and other magitech merely increased the value of trading with the College.   With The Milkwater weakening in 1010 and the Royal House moving to Bellivino and away from the College, the enchanters' leash was loosened. Rumours abound that they now possess more money and power than the crown itself.
