The Freelands

"The Freelands is the cradle and womb of Lady Trinity, it is our home and lifeblood of all races"

~Father Lucien I, the founder of the Holy Order and author of the Codex Stella

Geography

The geography of the Freelands varies greatly from east to west if one were to try and traverse it completely. Starting from the west there is the Shoal, a collection of isles along the shore where a variety of reefs and wild life dwell. The Shoal is where Tritons, Vedalken, and a variety of Beastfolk call home and is very peripheral to most normal Human control. Then as one heads further east one will find themselves in the Riverlands, a mixed landmass of swamp and waterways where the briney waters of the Eastern Sea slowly filter and become the Dividing Channel. Betwixt the Shoal and the Riverlands, one will find the ancient Drowned City, the ancestral home of the Vedalken and one of the few locations in the Freelands that has not changed in thousands of years.   North of the Dividing Channel one will find themselves in the Vale, region of hilly land in the shadow of the Razorback Mountains. The Razorback Mountains and the Razor Strait further north of that are natural barriers and boundaries between the Freelands and the Elvish territory of Avalon. In the Vale one will find all manner of Dragonborn, Goliath, Halfling, and other such humanoids in mixed company with normal Humans. Particularly in the Wind City, nestled into mountains as a trading hub along the northern frontiers of the Freelands. In addition, besides the Riverlands and the Shoal this region houses the third largest Beastfolk population as well. Namely they house are large population of Beastfolk of the more avian variety than the reptillian or aquatic variants found in the Riverlands and the Shoal.   Heading back south and below the Dividing Channel, one would find themselves in the Reach. The Reach is the open overly wide main landmass of the Freelands and holds most of the Human population, it is renowned for most of the farm country and sprawling cities throughout it. Two large principal cities lie within it, the Central City and the Imperial City. Central City is the major trading hub where one can find little to no other races other than humans, and if a mutant or non-humanoid is spotted they are usually swiftly dealt with by the Holy Order of the Light or the local Guards. In addition, Central City is the home and birthplace of the Warforged and where the forges and factories that crafted them reside and it is the main seat of power for the New Bloods. The Imperial City is even stricter and even more dangerous, furthermore it is twice the size of Central City and is the seat of power for the Holy Order of the Light. The Imperial City was once the home of House Highlander itself as it ruled over the Kingdom of Man with other representatives of the different Houses within its walls along with the former Holy Order having its own wing, but now its palace has been reconverted and into the Citadel of the Holy Order of the Light with the Hierophant sitting on throne.     Further east still one will come to the Royal Channel, the other principal waterway through the Freelands. If one were to travel it several days south upon it they would arrive at the Rock, an island full of scum and villainy unlike any seen on the mainland. It is a place of pirates, vagabonds, and adventurers; untouched by the New Bloods and the Holy Order of the Light since the fall of the Kingdom of Man at the hands of the Great Rebellion. If one were to travel back north along the Royal Channel again and head east, they'd arrive into the Hinterlands. The Hinterlands lay in the shadow of the Dragonscale Mountains, and culturally they are not unlike the Vale as far as the locals go. However there is a presence of Dwarves, Gnomes, Kobolds, and Goblinoids to be found here as well, such well travelled folk from beyond the mountains. If one were to head further north still they'd arrive at the Watcher City, a vanguard against any "threats" from the Dwellers of Eastlands and the Elves by sea to the north in the Northern Sea from Avalon.   If one were to head further east from the Watcher City through the valley between the Dragonscale Mountains, one would find themselves in the Exiled City. Rumor has it that most if any of the Old Bloods and their kin retreated here after the fall of the Kingdom of Man, its been thousands of years since then so it is hard to judge the validity of such claims. At this point on the journey, one will have arrived in the Eastlands. This a territory that is also very much out of the hands of the Holy Order of the Light and the New Bloods, this territory is solely under the control of Gnomes and Dwarves though it is contested heavily by Goblinoids seeking their own space. Further south still and in the center of a curious Dwarven made lake one will find the Iron City, an ancient and powerful city equal to the splendor and history of the Drowned City far to the west. Further south still one can find the Gate City, one of the only cities one can find this far south and east with any sort of human population with the next closest either being the Rock to the west across the Southern Sea or back north to the Exiled City.   After this if one were to go further east, they would be in the Pale. A large and expansive tundra off death and snow, according to legend it is populated with enormous Dragons and Giants eternally raging war upon one and other. No one was stepped foot there for thousands of years, not since humankind crossed it to arrive in the Freelands.
