The Flats of Caerum

Geography

Hidden between the Steadfast mountains and the majestic keep of Caerum Ba sits the Flats of Caerum. From the high spires of Caerum Ba, all manners of Kings, Queens, Lords, and other highfolk have gazed upon the mighty herds of Calpael that roam the flats and drink at the white waters of Lake Shimmerstil. They have watched the winds roll down the Steadfast and shake the leaves off of the Elder Trees. They have witnessed massive snow storms blanket the Flats in a never-ending sheet of white.

Fauna & Flora

Flora

When you enter the Flats, it is impossible to miss the mighty Elder trees that dot the land. Towering up to four hundred feet high, the Elder trees are said to have been around since before the first people settled in the region. Their white speckled bark and bright orange leaves contrast the rich greens of the flats and snowcapped whites of the mountains. Many trees have been cut down to provide shelter, warmth, and all sorts of décor for the people of Caerum Ba, but the ones that remain are considered to be sacred parts of the land.

Fauna

The mighty Calpael roam the flats in herds often referred to as families because of how close knit their relationships with each other tend to be. A family of Calpael can be as small as 10 but as big as 200, and their packs always have an alpha leader that dictates what the family does next. The alpha leader, according to historians at the Caerum Institute, is chosen through combat and can vary in gender. The alpha leader of the Calpael is called the Calpo.   During the Great Rebellion, many Calpael were enslaved and killed by the warriors of Highkeep, leaving less than 1,000 Calpael left in the region. Conservation efforts are ongoing but there is a concern that the species could be wiped out entirely.
