The Execution of Farthington, 448 AF

Following the revolt of Farthington in 448 AF, Lord Sveric Barinium placed the trading city under military control pending a further investigation of the riot (See Lord Darius Barinium the Elder, Lord of Baelisport for this event from the perspective of Lord Sveric’s son, Darius).   In the spring of 448 AF, rebel bands from the highlands past Knightsbane began scouting out the trade supply routes that connected Baelisport to the rest of Caeldon. By the summer, the rebels had successfully stopped the flow of fresh grains and produce into Farthington, creating a food epidemic that none were prepared for. There were riots in the streets and when Lord Sveric Barinium rode into town with the full might of the Royal Guard of Baelzeph, the people knew that the King cared only about order instead of caring for those under his rule.   When the royal marched into town on their mighty horses, clad in their resplendent armor, and brandishing the sharpest steel any of the townspeople had ever seen, most feared the worst. Baron Diccon had no spine to stand up to a tyrant such as Sveric, it was clear where his agenda lied. When Baron Diccon stood on his balcony the day prior and declared “Lord Sveric is a kind and merciful ruler, you must believe me when I say that he cares only about your best interest,” the Baron was met with a thunderous round of boos and profanities from the crowd at this comment. Through the night and into the morning, the militant nature of the crowd grew as more people joined in on the rioting. By the early afternoon, nearly the entire city were in the streets marching against their poor leadership.   When the first blazebottle went off, the crowd silenced. When the second went off, the crowd cheered. You could see mothers hurriedly forcing their children into alleyways or onto horses in an attempt to feel the city, only to be cut down by the Royal Guard that was now pressing into the crowd of 400+ belligerent citizens.   The Guard and the crowd fought long into the evening for the right to call Farthington or Baelisport home, and by the end of the conflict, less than 110 citizens remained alive in the entire city.   “My Lord Sveric, what would you have us do with these survivors?” Asked Baron Diccon.   “My dear friend Diccon, you know there’s only one thing we can do with these terrorists, even though it hurts me so.” Lord Sveric turned sharply to the guard standing on his left. “Commander Elkaz, gather the people and erect the gallows.”   The bodies of the people of Farthington hung in the wind for all to see as a warning of what would happen when one betrayed a Barinium of Baelisport. The residents of Baelisport and Knightsbane say that if you listen closely on a quiet evening, you can still hear the bodies swaying as the breeze rolls through.
