Maruuk

"I give to all who are born the ability to uncover the profound knowledge and the justice of my father. Those who possess understanding will penetrate everything and be ignorant of nothing. This is the holy wisdom I counsel; find the truth of the truth of the natural incantation within the purity of a life well lived."
— Maruuk's address atop Temonoi-Tempe to the great assembly

MARUUK (LG) Greater Power. Justice Bringer, Lord of Knowledge and Pure Incantations.

The Justice Bringer is the son and heir to Anulil, King of the gods and Ishtaranna the Throne Mother. Anulil voluntarily recognized the growing political authority of his son during The Godswar by handing over to him the control of humanity as well as elevating Maruuk to temporarily assume his leadership over the other gods as his Marshal in the field while he was preoccupied with contemplating their next move. Maruuk sees the world as it is rather than what it appears to be or he would like it to be. As protector of humanity, he understands how the Realms are filled with perpetual challenges and trials for those who battle for justice and defend the weak and innocent, in other words, how deadly it can be. Maruukian followers act with honor and chivalry and seek to uphold justice above all. Danger is to be faced head-on, with calm and resolve. Those who defeat evil are rewarded with glory, those who uphold good oaths are rewarded with virtue, those who follow the Code of Maruuk are truly in a state of being holy and pure. Numerous denominations of groups, knights, and church militant arms throughout the Known Realms venerate the Justice Bringer. Balancing their desire for order with a sense of justice and the common weal. Many have an unswerving sense of both personal and societal honor and always try to act in accordance with these precepts. They generally wear ornate armor etched or filigreed with designs both meaningful and fanciful while favoring deep blues and purple when unarmored. Those preferring to place greater emphasis on the practicality and wisdom of their actions and less on the honor or pride either they or society might derive from them tend to display a more dour, sober stoicism by favoring drab clothing and heavy practical armor with no filigree. Although few in number there are also those serene patrician figures and formidable individuals who mostly possess spotless manners and erudition in their chosen path as negotiators and interlocutors, typically lightly armored and often minimally armed unless expecting the worst. Though they come in many forms, all are renowned masters of arms. Paladins who take the Oath of Maruuk trace their lineage back to the legendary Enheduana of House Kinn, who established the first paladins as the Ageless One among the tribes of mortal men in the last years of The Godswar. Some consider their order of holy warriors as the first true paladins and are common in almost all other lesser orders of knighthood. It is impossible to overestimate how highly paladins of Maruuk are regarded in general, for they are the prototype for holy warriors everywhere (see PHB Paladin: Oath of Devotion). The temples and clergy of Maruuk are in contrast to the more militant arm of the church. Maruuk insists on the performance of traditional rituals and rites. Being the son of Ishtaranna and Anulil makes him a familiar figure to most customs about home and family as they can be traced to his mother as she taught him as a child. Maruuk also introduced the concept of laws and punishments to the mortals and his name is invoked at trials, diplomatic meetings, and other official situations where fairness is expected from a bargaining partner. His clerics continue to spread this knowledge and arbitrate disputes, carry messages between tribes and nations, act as legal advisers or judges when needed, scribe laws and other documents for the common folk, and travel to teach the proper traditions to children and heathens. They also have a limited martial aspect in their role as enactors of punishments for criminals, violators of taboos, and oath breakers. Maruuk worshipers are expected to comply with clerics when they serve this function. Older clerics are revered for their strategic skills and as teachers. When necessary followers of Maruuk are the first to be called to serve as judges, lawyers, teachers, and guides within most communities. These roles can carry them equally far into soft, lofty palatial positions in various courts around the realms or to hostile lands where their beliefs come into conflict with heretics, the uncivilized, or worse.
