The guard tower

The guard tower is the home of the city guard and located in the city center. Despite its name, it isn't an actual tower, as that would be rather ineffective space-wise while not gaining any advantage from rising above the city. The guard tower is instead a rather big and rectangle-shaped building with a very standard appearance from the outside. Inside is space for the guards to sleep in big halls, storage space for their equipment, and a big dining hall where they're served food all day long as the shifts vary wildly between different parts of the city and different patrols. The sleeping quarters, while considered cramped by the time of their construction, is now bigger and more spaced out than many of the guards have at their home, making it one of the perks with being a guard. Different sleeping halls are reserved for different ranks with them becoming more and more spacious as you move up the ranks. When becoming a city guard, the new member gets an assigned sleeping spot sometimes shared with someone of the opposite shift that they run, with full access to showers, storage spaces, and the dining hall. There's always plenty of people moving in and out of the building's lower floors. On the two highest floors the highest-ranking officers live and operate, organizing and communicating with different organizations throughout the city. The people working on these floors live in the guard tower all hours of the day, never leaving to go home. As such many of them don't have any families of their own, instead being married to the work they do. They're loyal to a fault and serve the city to keep the order and help it survive and thrive. Or that's at least what the city says to the people.
