Hartman Kemmler is the son of Otis Kemmler, a simple train mechanic, and his wife Giselle in the crowning jewel of the Clockwork Empire, Simmsmout. Throughout his youth, he was afflicted by a mysterious disease that no doctor seemed able to cure or identify. Desperate, his parents continued to try medical professionals and frauds alike, until they contacted a foreigner who had recently arrived in the city and begun offering medical treatment. They were overjoyed when the stranger succeeded and cared little in their joy for his sudden departure from the city afterwards.
The young Hartman Kemmler, inspired by his salvation, dedicated his life to the study of medicine and soon found himself a student at the Imperial Academy of the Clockwork Empire. Here, Hartman met Boris, who would become his best friend. They bonded over a shared love of experimentations and pushing the boundaries of what medicine could accomplish. This shared love eventually led Boris to offer himself as a test subject for one of Doctor Kemmler’s experiments, resulting in Boris’s current state. However, during Harmann’s studies, he discovered the truth behind his miraculous recovery. His heart had been replaced by a magical artifact made from soulstone. Since magic had cured him where science could not, he chose to begin studying magic in secret, against the laws of his empire.
Doctor Kemmler’s adventuring career began with his leaving his comfortable teaching position at the Imperial Academy in disgrace due to his mismanagement of school property. More precisely, he was running for his life from both a furious mob and law enforcement after one of his magical experiments went awry. The Doctor found some employ with the Adventurer’s guild, doing a variety of odd jobs and tasks for them and eventually opened his own clinic in the peaceful town of Greenest.
