Summer Camp 2020: Meta

Genre

The Everglowing Forest is a high fantasy setting. Everything in the forest is tainted with magic, even the fireflies that light up the way out gate of spirits. Magic is as important in this world as the laws of physics are in our world. In addition to the high magic, the Everglowing Forest also is an exploration setting as adventurers discover and explore this world for the very first time.

Scope

The scope is reasonably small as the adventurers never went outside of the forest. They mainly explore a small region around the gate of spirits and around the main city of the Oryms. The thirst for knowledge leads our adventurers to stop and observe a butterfly, a flower or a stone for days, to understand all its details and thus better transcribe this new world in their scientific treatise.

Themes

Here is some themes I consider exploring :

  • Magic is a science

  • Understand is the key

  • Stereotype may be wrong

Mood

I think the mood will vary from grim-neutral to grim-bright depending the area the adventurers are exploring. Adventurers are explorers who wish to observe this world without altering its nature, but ultimately they will, at least at a smaller scale. The idea is to explore the world as Darwin did with the Galapagos Islands or Doc did with his time travel.

Conflicts

A New World to Discover

The adventurers will discover a brand new world, where everything is new to them and their assumption about it will be wrong. Is gender defined around masculinity and femininity? Does the natural laws of physics applied to this world?

They Are Outsiders

Forest dwellers have never seen outsiders like these adventurers. How will the natives react to the arrival of the outsiders? Will the world interact with them in a way they except?
