Velodrea, Goddess of Order

"You already possess the capacity to do what is right. Now, you must find the will to do it."
Most commonly worshiped by The Kingdom of Chal, Velodrea is not as old as some of the other gods of the pantheon, but unsurprisingly for her role, she takes her duties very seriously. It is said that she came about in response to the struggles of mortals in balancing their base instincts and their conscience, the need for internal order and self-control. In this, she is as much an ideal to aspire to as a patron deity that answers mortal prayers. Indeed, it is sometimes said tongue-in-cheek by proponents of other deities that all that the Goddess of Order will do if you ask for her help is tell you to do it yourself.   While not entirely inaccurate, this is something of a disingenuous oversimplification. It is true that Velodrea encourages her followers to resolve their own issues, as doing otherwise would miss the point of improving their self-control, but she frequently helps steer them in the right direction to do so. This is not to say she personally shows up to answer every prayer - though her appearance is not entirely unheard of either - but that she steers her followers towards influences and situations that will help them learn what they need. These can be anything from harsh trials to positive conditions that give them the room to take the first steps towards improvement, but her true followers welcome both in equal measure.   For many mortals, however, following Velodrea seems like a case of blind perfectionism, a constant struggle towards an unattainable goal, and enduring the pain of never being 'good enough'. A constant feeling of harsh judgment turns these people away, though her worshipers see things differently. The Goddess of Order does not ask for perfection, only the desire and genuine attempt to improve, and she believes in her followers' capacity to do so as much as they believe in her. This grants her a following amongst those fighting against anger or addiction and zen masters alike, to say nothing of her nearly ubiquitous worship in the Kingdom of Chal.   Others still see a more cynical interpretation of her following. In order and self-control, they see the suppression of free will, emotion, and the things that make life worth living. On top of this, they see obvious benefits for the leadership of a kingdom that makes her worship commonplace, as it teaches people to stifle their grievances and rebellious tendencies themselves. While there is likely some truth to this amongst the less scrupulous nobility of Chal, the true tenets of the Goddess of Order say no such thing - her followers are told to do what is right, against their fear and reservations, no matter how difficult it may be. To say this suppresses and opposes rebellion would be patently false on principle, though what she truly believes to be 'right' is itself open to debate.   Similarly to Mana, there are those that suspect Velodrea of being an avatar of the Lord of Water due to their overlapping principles. However, she has never actually been seen to visit the Plane of Water, let alone the Realm of Yore, as she instead resides in a reflection of The Eye itself. Within this domain, she is said to tend to the needs of her followers as if she was tending a garden, supported by beings that can best be described as her own order of knights. Either wearing or composed of perfectly reflective armor, these knights serve as heralds and instruments of her will, as well as messengers to other deities when the need arises.

Divine Symbols & Sigils

Whether metal or glass, there is no dispute that Velodrea's holy symbol is the mirror. Ornate hand mirrors are used by priests and clerics for casting and contemplation alike, and mirrors feature prominently in her churches and monasteries. In the absence of these implements, a reflection upon the surface of water is often used in communion with her.

Tenets of Faith

The tenets of Velodrea revolve around cultivating patience and inner peace, and controlling one's base urges to act rationally. It centers upon an assumption that every soul already has a sense of right and wrong, and that as her quote implies, acting on that sense is only a matter of will. It does not directly touch upon matters of external order - that is the domain of Remphos - but holds that if people act with rationality and do not give in to their instincts, such order and peace will inevitably follow.

Physical Description

Identifying Characteristics

Velodrea is depicted wearing an immaculate white robe, concealing most of her features besides the stern gaze of her silver eyes. Her face is mature and womanly, without wrinkle or blemish, and she rarely deviates in her appearance when gracing mortals with her presence. More prominent than her admittedly simple appearance, however, is the way she moves; every motion possesses unearthly control and grace, leading some more poetic witnesses to describe her as seeming weightless. 'As mist given purpose' is one of the more iconic bardic descriptions of her movement, to give one example.
