Plane of Air

The Boundless Skies

One might expect a plane based around the element of Air to be a wide open space of air and winds, and they would be right. Most of the area is defined by this relative emptiness, though at the same time it makes any real features plainly visible for hundreds of miles. Anything from sky whales to floating cities dot the endless expanse, while the light of the Plane of Fire illuminates it.

Traits

  • Gravity: Beings with souls and will decide where 'down' is (in other words, Subjective Directional Gravity). Certain areas have an obvious 'preferred' down, and the GM may require a Willpower check of difficulty 5 or 10 in these cases to choose a different one.
  • Winds: While those in the plane can fall in whichever direction they wish to go, powerful and sometimes even hurricane-force winds can impede this, especially with a lack of grounding. Beings may suffer Impacts or require Strength checks to avoid losing course depending on regional conditions.
  • Magic: Spells of the Path of Air (including subpaths or free access spells a caster uses with it) take effect at one level higher than they are cast at, while spells on the Path of Earth suffer the opposite effect.
  • Psionics: Psychic powers from the Discipline of Teleportation gain a +20 to Potential. This increases to +40 in Warp Fields. Psychokinesis powers related to motion gain a +20 to Potential.

Geography

While it would be generous to call anything in this plane 'geography', the Boundless Skies have certain regional traits. Some, closer to the Plane of Darkness, bear a closer resemblance to a night sky, and often have harsh, cold winds. Sometimes, strands of elemental Darkness break off here, bringing their strange blind wildlife with them. On the other end, scorching winds with biting white sand mark the opposite border. It is not only on these borders that the plane has notable traits, though.   Some regions are home to perpetual windstorms, suspending far flung islands of elemental mass. Others hold what locals call 'Warp Fields', areas where space bends around itself in convoluted ways and portals to far-flung reaches of the plane (or perhaps just to another adjacent portal in the same field) are abundant and hard to avoid. Masses of semisolid electrical energy, similar to those acquired by the psychic power Energy Object Creation, add to the strange sights. Some of these lightning masses are even large enough to have been fashioned into glowing palaces for natives.   Civilizations are often patched together from the raw materials of the plane, such as the occasional chunks of solidified Fire, Darkness, lightning, or even Solid Air, or magically conjured. As such, anything from energy-rich floating cities with glowing red and gold foundations to dim pitch-black citadels are present depending on where one looks. Water is rare and spread out, predominantly taking the form of clouds, with some patches of ice or water 'bubbles' closer to the Plane of Darkness.

Fauna & Flora

While some airborne or clinging plants feed off the plane's light and scarce moisture, most natural life of the plane takes the form of flying species constantly hunting each other. Some of these species, well-adapted for life in the Boundless Skies, lack legs entirely, making them that much more airborne. Others even lack wings, flying purely supernaturally with the power of Air. Still others go in the opposite direction, exploiting the lack of gravitational limits and wide open space to take forms of immense mass, such as the previously mentioned sky whales. Some of these beasts reach such sizes that other denizens of the plane opt to dwell upon them rather than using the scarce elemental matter.   Dragons, and not just those of lightning, are notably common due to the ample hunting grounds afforded to them. Some migrate from the Plane of Fire for the thrill of the wide open skies and distinctly more flammable prey. Others, Dark dragons of scarce intelligence but a bestial cunning, are rarely seen in their own plane by any who live to tell the tale. Some planar travelers assert that the dance of two dragons in aerial combat in the skies is a treasure that one must witness at least once in their life... from a safe distance.   Sentient residents include anything from skyfaring nomads to residents of its floating cities. Thanks to the element's links to space, planar and intraplanar portals are common, making it a sort of hub for supernatural civilizations. Apart from those passing through, common elemental residents include djinn, beings with clouds or whirlwinds in the place of legs that hold powers over Air and, occasionally, Illusion.

Natural Resources

Many of the most useful resources of the plane are not things that can simply be taken out of it. The convenience of a mastered Warp Field or domesticated sky whale, for instance, can easily be great boons to any planar traveler. On the other hand, it is often a safer place to acquire resources from either of its neighboring planes in smaller amounts. After all, while it is far from idyllic, it is not as actively hostile to life as Darkness or Fire. An exception to this is the solidified electricity that forms some pockets of the plane, which is prized as much for its appearance and the awe it can inspire when forged into weapons as its actual properties.   Some enterprising casters, however, are aware of other useful materials within the atmosphere itself. Gasses lighter than The Eye's atmosphere exist in the plane in regions and pockets, as do pockets of energized elemental Air that strain against any container and cause energetic winds. These things are difficult to isolate and capture by their nature, more frequently forming dangers for the unsuspecting than loot for adventurers. However, there are those that still value them, and that would happily send travelers to gather them on their behalf.
