Flectetium
Flectetium is a rare element, generally only found in metallic asteroids and sometimes deep within planets. It is stable, dense and conductive, and is generally used for its unique property of creating a gravitic warp field upon receiving an electrical charge. It is used in the creation of EFDs (Electrical Flectetium Drives), as well as wormhole gates and artificial gravity generators.
Properties
Material Characteristics
Flectetium is a pink, semi translucent metal, commonly seen in either raw, crystalline form in ore, or in its refined form, where it is more opaque, and darker in color.
Physical & Chemical Properties
Flectetium has the unique ability to generate small gravitational fields when carrying an electrical charge, which vary in effect based on the shape of the metal and the type of charge given. When layered and configured properly, these fields can affect entire ships, or the fabric of space itself, though the volume and power requirements are incredibly large in the latter case, and mis-configuring fields can have disastrous consequences.
History & Usage
Discovery
Several species have independently discovered flectetium at different points in their history, and generally have discovered its properties on their own. However, the Velari were the most successful at creating stable warp fields and wormholes, as opposed to, for example, Human EFDs, which tended to be prone to failure or unintended consequences. Most EFDs in use today are either of original Velari make and design, or modified versions of such.
Distribution
Trade & Market
Flectetium is a valuable commodity throughout the charted systems of the Milky Way, as it is required for reliable, cost-effective space travel. Prices fluctuate wildly between systems, and thus flectetium sales tend to contribute a large fraction of the average trader's income.
