Sun-Koku Union

With the increasing power of the Xia Shogunate, and the threat of the outsiders closing at their borders, three different societies joined forces to stand against the coming storm. These three groups are: the dwarves, dwellers of the mighty mountains, the Goliaths, wise titans of the frigid heights, and the Hobgoblins, people of the dark forests and hills. Forming the union was not an easy task. Each of the three major sects of the region wanted to ensure that privilege and responsibility would be equalized, and that the minorities-people like the humans, firbolgs, and others-would also get some form of representation. Many drafts of law were tossed out before a consensus was made. While not every single individual may like who things have changed, most will agree that with unity, they will prevail.   The dwarves are a proud and hardy people. They have developed within the region’s mountains for countless years. As such, their stone working, golemancy, and forges are unrivaled. In the frigid air above, the goliaths have conquered the rocky hills and icy bluffs. They have maintained beautiful mountain temples, and fish in the many lakes and rivers that flow down towards the sea. These gentle giants have learned over generations to be still in the mind, but fierce like a storm. Industrializing the hills, plains, and forests, the goblinoids make up much of the settlements on the surface. These cunning people mix their natural affinity for exploration and duty with a learned attachment for martial skill and dragonnel training, which the hobgoblins are renowned for across the isles. Each sect is led by a representative who holds the expectations, needs and aspirations of their kin. Together they form the Sun Triumvirate that leads the Union towards the future, however, it is rumored that dark forces are twisting their shadowy hands and beginning to pull the strings of that future.   Dark magic has begun to shape the fates of many in the realm of the Sun-Koku, as witches, warlocks and dark mages learned how to utilize the now spreading dark energies coming from below the mountains. The union has not taken any action against this and the members are worried that in the near future it will become a serious problem. Because of the lack of care from the triumvirate about anyone practicing with the dark arts, some inhabitants of the union formed the Ember Inquisition. This faction of witch-hunters is a dogmatic group tasked with eliminating dangerous dark magic users, dark entities, monsters, and cults that could become a threat to the union and their lands. The high command of the union officially does not support this inquisition but it ignores it as well, creating political conflict between the inquisition and those who support the freedoms of magecraft.   The mostly underground societies of the Union are more dedicated to what the stone and metal can and cannot do, and the magical implications of them. This is why in their undercities and dungeons it is common to see floating stone buildings sustained by mystical crystals, chains and living statues and golems that help maintain such societies, despite the social unrest within their cities.   The people of the surface, such as the many goblinoids, seem to be much more adventurous, and exploration and spirit walks play an important role in the shift between childhood and adulthood. Additionally, there is a sacred reverence for animal spirits that persist among the goblinoids, chief among them being that of the fox. Tales speak of fated individuals meeting with such spirits and gaining power or wisdom through them.   The three major peoples of the union seem to be very positive about the changes the union has brought. There has been less war and fighting among the three primary races of the union. Growth and prosperity have grown and blessed the lives of many. But with the recent divide over mysterious magic and the growing danger of what might lie below the ground, people cling to their unique superstitions and beliefs. It is an uncertain age for those living within the union and it is unclear what or who to trust. What will the future bring to the isles with this new passing of age?

Structure

The Sun-Koku Union is organized into a triumvirate, consisting of the three main sects of the union: the dwarves, the goliaths, and the hobgoblins. Each sect is led by a representative, who holds the expectations, needs, and aspirations of their kin. Together, these three representatives form the triumvirate, which serves as the ruling body of the union. The current members of the triumvirate are:   King Hogni Stonepalm, representative of the dwarves and leader of the mountain clans. A skilled craftsman and warrior, King Hogni is known for his strength, courage, and determination.   Chieftain Gogmaji Thundercaller, representative of the goliaths and leader of the hill clans. A wise and gentle giant, Chieftain Gogmaji is known for his spiritual insight, deep connection to the land, and ability to bring people together.   Warlord Hindo the Swift, representative of the hobgoblins and leader of the forest clans. A cunning and ambitious goblinoid, Warlord Hindo is known for his strategic mind, martial prowess, and ability to outmaneuver his enemies.   Under the Triumvirate, each sect is further divided into smaller clans and communities, each led by a local leader or council. These local leaders are responsible for the day-to-day governance of their communities, and report to the Triumvirate on matters of importance.

Culture

The culture of the Sun-Koku Union is a mix of the traditional cultures of the three major races that make up the union: the dwarves, goliaths, and hobgoblins. The dwarves value hard work and skill in their stone-working and forging, and have a deep connection to the earth and the underground. The goliaths place a strong emphasis on spirituality and mental clarity, with their mountain temples and peaceful way of life. The hobgoblins value exploration, martial skill, and their connection to animal spirits. Overall, the union values unity and cooperation, as demonstrated by the formation of the triumvirate to lead the nation. However, there is currently tension within the union regarding the use of dark magic and the actions of the Ember Inquisition. Despite this, the people of the union are generally positive about the benefits of the union, such as increased prosperity and less interracial conflict.

This situation may create political conflict within the union, as some members may support the freedom to practice magic, while others may support the efforts of the inquisition to eliminate dangerous magic users.   Additionally, the union seeks to protect and support the rights of minorities within the union. This may involve ensuring that these groups have representation in the Sun Triumvirate and other decision-making bodies, as well as advocating for their rights and interests.
