Tanglebrier Forest

Though the Greenwold is marked by a number of geographic zones, the largest terrain feature in the realm is the massive forest from which it derives its name.   To those not familiar with the depths of the forest, the Tanglebrier is commonly thought of as an undifferentiated mass of trees. In fact, it ‘s host to more diversity of wildlife and geography then all the rest of the Greenwold put together. Indeed, at over 1,000 miles in breadth, it contains the ruins of entire nations within its vastness - lost to sight under the roots of uncountable trees. From the twisted Puzzlewood, to the lush Fae Gardens, to the rocky drops of the Crags, to the gloaming of the Cursed Grove, the only quality shared throughout is the unbroken dominion of trees.   Broadly considered, the Tanglebrier can be broken into two regions, the relatively approachable forest fringe, and the dark and foreboding forest heart. While the fringe resembles great forests anywhere in the world, the heart is wholly unique – a place of legendary magic and myth, where the laws of man hold less sway. None who enter the heart leave it unchanged.   The dominant feature of the Greenwold, this forest is immense. It used to be the home of the great elven empire of Ser’Alun, but the tragedy and disaster that is Mouyld brought it to destruction. Now it is the home of the Dragon and her followers. The remnants of the elves still live there as well, but they have been reduced to a more tribal state than they used to be. The forest is broken into two basic zones, the Forest Fringe along the outside of the Forest, and the Forest Heart. The fringe is home to the elves and any forest creatures that remain untainted by the Dragon while the Heart is where Mouyld sleeps and her forces live. Many who go into the forest never return, but any who go into the Heart disappear forever. Because it is such a cursed place and the elves have become so unwelcoming, little knowledge is remembered of the forest. One record I found discussed how it was not one uniform group of trees, but a mix of different areas. “From the twisted Puzzlewood, to the lush Fae Garden, to the rocky drops of the Crags, to the gloaming of the Cursed Grove, the only quality shared throughout is the unbroken dominion of trees.”   Should one be determined to go into the Forest, the one city I have found anything of is River Break. It would seem to be at an area where many rivers converge, and the elves still live. But I suggest staying away as you are more likely to die than see the sights of the elven city and return to tell the tales.

Geography

Strange and ancient magics ward the heart of the Tanglebrier, frustrating attempts to gain entry by those who have not been there before.   In particular, the heart of the forest is unapproachable by air, unless one knows the secret of entry. All others flying over see only an unbroken canopy of leaves that blocks sight. Creatures descending through the canopy find themselves somehow back at the outskirts of the forest heart.   Even creatures attempting to enter on foot find themselves wandering in circles on impossible paths, unless they’ve been granted access by the spirits that ward it. In addition, divination spells can’t be used on creatures or locations that are inside the forest heart, by those who are outside of it.
