Juu

Arguably the desert's most secretive society, Juu is a sanctuary for any and all.   While originally used as a safe haven for freed slaves and refugees of war, the carved caverns and tunnels have since grown into a proper city.

Structure

Juu is run by a voluntary council acting in tandem with the Matriarch. The council includes voices from every part of the city, including but not limited to: the city watch, tradespeople, the fishers, educators, civil service workers, and new refugees.

Public Agenda

Juu was founded first and foremost as a refuge. Though it has evolved over the years, this continues to be the driving motivation behind the city's existence.   Racism and xenophobia are prohibited, and are grounds for removal; as the city's location is a secret, removal is often a death sentence.

Assets

Juu boasts a wealth of assorted tradespeople, sea fishers, natural minerals, and freshwater springs.

History

There is no concrete record of Juu's founding, and its current location is not its first. Only the Matriarch knows Juu's full history.

Trade & Transport

The initial refugee settlement was eventually converted into Juu's most prominent feature: the bazaar. Built within the city's largest natural cavern, the bazaar is a multi-terraced, multi-leveled, sprawling cacophony of canvas stalls, workshops, apartments, freshwater fountains, alley gardens, and public stages. The bazaar hosts all of Juu's public trade and is the only portion of the city that (heavily vetted) traders are allowed to visit. To account for this, a distribution network was established within Tuibwarii's trading caravans to limit Juu's exposure while still allowing resources to flow freely.

Infrastructure

Juu is divided organically into four sections; the Bazaar, the Quarters, the Terraces, and the Port.   The initial settlement was eventually converted into the bazaar. Built within the city's largest natural cavern, the bazaar is a multi-terraced, multi-leveled, sprawling cacophony of canvas stalls, workshops, apartments, freshwater fountains, alley gardens, and public stages. Though not strictly organized, most of the market has settled into distinct sections based on the goods or services offered. The bazaar is the only portion of the city that (heavily vetted) traders are allowed to visit.   Built into the cavern's walls are the living quarters; the lowest level is reserved for caravanserai, while all upper levels belong to permanent Juu residents. Separate levels can be reached through a system of wide halls and stairs, or across the cavern by way of tiered stone bridges. All of the levels contain small gardens and public spaces used for casual recreation away from the noise of the bazaar.   Tucked into natural crevices and blind corners are Juu's terraces. Though technically outside, they are well hidden from the rest of the canyons and anyone who may be passing by. These scattered plateaus are used for anything from sparring grounds to watchmen posts. Some play host to Juu's native bees and the many apiaries necessary to support a steady trade of honey and wax goods.   Down below Juu's main caverns is the grotto, a natural formation of tiered salt pools leftover from years of ocean erosion within the caves. The original opening was expanded into a sheltered bay and fishing port.
