Transcript of a lecture given by Dr. Charlie Pierce about Contingency Site-27

"Welcome! Please take your seats anywhere you'd like. You will also find, uhh. Water and snacks and, uhh. Right! Refreshments in the back of the room, should you need any. I see a lot of nervous faces here today, so if it's any consolation, I am also quite nervous, this is my first time leading a new, uhh. Err. An orientation! God, I'm so nervous I feel like a dictionary - I have all the words, I just can't find the right ones!

"Right. Well. Allow me to introduce myself, my name is Dr. Charlie Pierce. I am a Senior Researcher for the Paranormal Investigations Division here at Site-27. The woman who usually gives this lecture is... Uhh. Recovering. In any case, this lecture is intended to be a launching pad for your time here at the site and with the Contingency itself. I know that most of you here were recruited. Some of the top minds of your fields. Others here have... hmm. Stumbled upon an opportunity. But what is this place? Where are we exactly? Why is everything so clean, glossy, and porcelain white?

To start off, we're currently in what as known as Contingency Site-27. Let's break that down. The Contingency part is simple. It's the organization you have all, or hopefully will, devoted yourselves to. We're the bulwark in the dark, the guardians of reason, yadda yadda, you've heard all that stuff already. As for the 'Site-27' part, that gets a little more complicated. For starters, the number itself isn't that important. We aren't the 27th site out of however many there are. Hmm. In fact, I, myself, don't know how many sites there are worldwide. The number just identifies this site without giving away too much information. For example, if someone were to overhear 'Site Mount Tantalus', that might create security issues and problems both for our organization and for the person who overheard that. 'Site-27' gives away nothing. So, when referring to this place, please just say 'Site-27'.

That being said, we are situated beneath the Mount Tantalus mountain range in British Columbia. The majority of you here are living on-site, and as you may have noticed, this place is massive. It's our own little underground city. We have our own restaurants, bars, markets, umm. Imagine a really big college town, but underground. In order to not mess with our circadian rhythms, the lights in Site-27 will change colors and luminosity depending on the time of day. If I do say so myself, night time is quite pretty, with the lighting changing to shades of soft blues and greys. Please note that if you see straight red lighting, that means there's an ongoing security threat. More on that another time, but for now, follow the people evacuating to get to a safe area. While life here can be surprisingly pleasant, nothing stops any of you from going topside. Take care not to be tailed. Don't bring back any dates you find on the Tinders either! (Transcriber's Note: This is painful. The Tinders? Really? No one onsite ever reads these transcriptions. I swear, you accidently smoke a random old lady during a raid and Ethics will send your ass to do this bullshit. We have wearable A.I. accessories and robots here, why can't they do this?) "Umm. Right. Tough crowd! Must be the nerves. Getting back on track, do keep the place clean. The clean white sheen on the walls and floors are so that we can easily spot if something is amiss. A lot of anomalies leave a trail behind - a lot of them are quite malodorous and disgusting. I remember this one time we had a containment breach and let me tell you (Transcriber's Note: I refuse to do anymore of this. This guy went on for about 25 minutes talking about an anomaly that got out and left sticky, orange goo everywhere. Some sort of sentient beanie baby, I don't know, and I don't give half of a flying fuck anymore. Only useful bit after he was done was him saying that in each hallway there is a wall panel marked with a thick black "X", those are weapon, ammo, and first aid caches in cases of emergency.)
