Nancy's Harbour Cafe

So come take a drink and drown your sorrows
And all of our fears will be gone till tomorrow
We'll have no regrets and live for the day
In Nancy's harbour cafe
— Pirate Captain rumored to once have slained a leviathan

Architecture

A very simple tavern, initially built with a similar style to most buildings surrounding it: mortar walls and hay roof, both sustained with several wooden beams placed on simple stone foundations.

A 1-story building with a creaking wooden door as its main entrance. Customers are greeted with a large room lighted by candles and oil-lamps hung from most wooden beams or placed in tables. The kitchen lies in a smaller room on the opposite side of the room from the entrance, with a small passage to the bedroom belonging to the owner, Nancy 'Barnacle' Morgan. To the right of the kitchen, two small bedrooms available for renting await whoever is willing to afford them.
There is a basement accessible through a trapdoor in the kitchen, used mostly for storage. Not many who know the owner dare inquire much further.

History

Built during the peak of the Golden Age for Fyr-Elfhafen, this tavern became the retirement project of Nancy 'Barnacle' Morgan, former specialized sailor.
Partially burned down during the destruction of Fyr-Elfhafen, Nancy's Cafe remains partially a ruin, but still the favorite gathering spot for individuals not so comfortable with the law, but smart enough not to upset the lovely elderly owner.

Maelstrom

"The Maelstrom" is the name given to the fighting ring inside Nancy's Harbour Café. A large circle on the floor built out of rough stone pavement that at first glance has no special features besides the half-rotten wooden barricades that encircle it, separating it from the rest of the tavern.

Although it can be used as a simple fighting ring, The Maelstrom's appeal lies in its two special features. The first, is how it can be triggered to collapse into itself in a controlled manner through the use of a dedicated mechanism hidden behind the bar counter. Once this mechanism is activated, the floor of the fighting ring will slowly begin rotating and descending. After a couple of seconds, the outer area of the ring will stop descending while the rest continues, repeating this process for every one of the 7 layers of the radially-placed stone pavement. After the process is complete, the previously flat fighting ring is now cone-shaped, with its center being the deepest part of the cone, leaving a spiral-like appearance on the descending steps.

The Maelstrom's second special feature is how it uses the proximity of the tavern to the sea to allow sea water to slip into it. Beginning when the center of the ring has reached its lowest level, sea water will begin flowing into the ring from cracks in the stone pavement near its top. As the water flows through the spiraling cracks in the stone left from the rotating descent, it accelerates towards the bottom. Soon, as the water accumulates near the center of the fighting ring faster than it can be dispensed into underground, a miniaturized maelstrom is formed that can imprison even experienced fighters who have let themselves be caught in the current.

Fights

Casual fights arranged between two consenting members can be performed within the Maelstrom, but only in its non-activated mode.
Challenging the current champion can be done through an entry fee of 25gp. There is a reward of 100gp upon victory, plus an offer of 1 free daily drink to the current champion. A challenge to the champion must be done with the approval of Nancy herself, with three days in advance and the fight must occur within the activated Maelstrom.
