Schvarzbaum* (shvarts-bowm)

Deep into Cishadar lies something like the Betans, yet not. Where Hadar* is plagued by automated defenses ready to kill on sight, Schvarzbaum* is plagued with a backwards, confused, and xenophobic race of humans with a victim complex. The name of their star was originally Cappadocia*, but the new name is the first radio messages picked up form the star when the Chord first connected there in the 500s. In the native language of the planet, it translates to something like "Black Tree," or "Dark Forest."    The true meaning of this phrase is unknown, however, as the denizens of Schvarzbaum* keep their language illusory and chaotic. Deciphering those first few, haphazard transmissions was already a monumental task, made possible only by the fact that the natives did not know Concordian ears were listening. They didn't take long to find out, however, that they were being watched. The responded in two ways.    First, they used what rudimentary technology they had - slow atomic missiles, basic drone strike craft, railguns at light-minute ranges. It appeared that the world was in the middle of a war on the planet and its moon when the explorers discovered them, but the two main powers of the system united against the perceived alien threat. Second, they drastically reduced the amount of EM transmissions across the system, giving Concordian linguists nothing to decipher. While the planets have eased on their broadcast communications in the past four centuries, every broadcast is quantum encrypted. Given that this technology eludes even our scientists, it is bizarre that this race should even be capable of this.   Ever since, Schvarzbaum* has served as little more than a connecting route between Kiluru* and Sagarmatha*. Any exploration into the system is met with force, and given the lack of communications, the Concordance has declared them an uncontacted system. Both sides want to keep it this way. Thankfully learning from the exploration of Hadar*, the explorers of Schvarzbaum* erected the transit point far away from the natives' orbits.

Geography

Schvarzbaum* has two habitable systems in its inner planets. Without knowing the natives' names for these planets, they remain S* Beta and S* Gamma by convention.    The two planets are of similar habitability. Whether they share a biology or each contains its own unique tree of life is unknowable without closer analysis. What is distinctive about the planets, however, is the carbon-dioxide moon orbiting S* Gamma. Some scientist hypothesize that this moon is an artifact of the planet's terraforming. They hypothesize that the planet was once a hothouse planet like Teica in Huitzli*, but its extreme atmosphere was frozen and then removed to orbit. They also claim that the same could be done to Teica herself in ~500 years.    The only outer planet of the system is a single gas giant with remarkably few moons. Ever since their discovery, the people of Beta and Gamma have constructed far flung military bases and outposts on the few rocky moons the gas giant offers. Thankfully, the transit points of the system are far away enough that they still believe we haven't noticed them. An occupation of the transit points would be costly and difficult, so the Concordance decided long ago to play the natives' little game.
