The Chord

The following is an excerpt from an introductory political geography course lecture from the University of the Cascades, in the SFCC on Concordia.   The traversable universe, as we know it, lies along our own little cosmic string. Hence, we call it our world The Chord. Huh, our world. It's funny. We've been interplanetary for several hundred years now, but will still call our everything just "the world". Starships are faster than linguistics, I suppose!   [A student asks the professor if this will be on the test, and if not, why she is rambling off track.]   Right. Sorry. As I was saying, there are 29 planets that compromise the Chord, but this is certainly not a constant. If you keep up with the news, you'll no doubt know of the eastern expedition - again, 'east' being another case of our planetary past influencing our patterns of speech, but this isn't a linguistics class. Anyway. Might be 30 soon.   Now, we can split the Chord in half, [she points to the image on the wall] here at the Hadar system. To the 'west' we have Transhadar, and to the 'east' we have Cishadar. The other side of Hadar, and our own side of Hadar, naturally. And, of course, we divide the Chord here, as both halves must be able to sustain themselves. This is due to the hostile automated elements within the system, making it difficult to safely transit.   [Several students in the back of the lecture hall loudly complain about the class being a waste of time and money.]   Excuse me, quiet in the back! This is important background! Just because you already know this doesn't mean everyone does. I am not leaving anyone behind.   [A student asks why their time should be wasted for the benefit of their less educated peers. Another complains about useless requirements that won't help them in the job market. Several students voice their agreement with both.]   This is about much more than that! Complain to the dean, not me. Anyway. Let's move on with the lecture.
