10th Cavalry Regiment

10th Cavalry are a regiment of negro "Buffalo" soldiers stationed in Kansas and the Indian Territory. Troops are garrisoned at Fort Sill, Fort Gibson, Fort Dodge, Fort Arbuckle, Camp Supply, the Wichita Agency, and the Cheyenne Agency. Regimental headquarters is at Fort Gibson in the Indian Territory. The Regimental Commanding officer is Colonel Benjamin Grierson, a music teacher with no pre-Civil War military experience. He is the 10th’s first commander. Grierson distinguished himself by leading a daring cavalry raid into Mississippi during General Grant’s Vicksburg campaign of 1863. The 10th served against the Cheyenne in Kansas at the end of the 1860s, and now polices the Kiowa and Comanche in Indian Territory. The regiment comprises eleven troops. Their designation, date of organization, original composition and color of horses are as below:

Troop C.—Color, bay. Organized May 15, 1867. Captain Edward Byrne; Lieutenants T. C. Lebo and T. J. Spencer.
Troop D.—Color, bay. Organized June 1, 1867. Captain J. W. Walsh; Lieutenants Robert Gray and R. H. Pratt.
Troop E.—Color, bay. Organized June 15, 1867. Captain G. T. Robinson; Lieutenant J. T. Morrison.
Troop F.—Color, gray. Organized June 21, 1867. Captain G. A. Armes; Lieutenants P. L. Lee and J. A. Bodamer.
Troop G.-Color, bay. Organized July 5, 1867. Captain H. T. Davis; Lieutenants W. B. Kennedy and M. J. Amick.

Troop M.—Color, mixed. Organized October 15, 1867. Captain H. E. Alvord; Lieutenants P. L. Lee and W. R. Harmon. Troop M got all the horses that did not match any other troop and is called the "calico" troop.
