Ice Drake

Art by ERA7, I do not own this artwork
Ice Drakes are a species of dragon native only to the frozen continent of Mowera. Found rarely in snowy mountains and forests, they are the only dragon to inhabit the area and the only dragon that can breathe ice, creating large jagged glaciers capable of destruction. Unlike fire wyverns or lightning lungs, ice drakes can not fly. Instead, they ambush their prey through camouflage. Ice drakes are the apex predators on Mowera and eat medium-to-large prey animals like mammoths, grand stag, woolly rhinos, and strorghel.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Ice drakes are large quadrupedal reptiles that walk on four powerful limbs with 5 talon-tipped toes on each foot. Their backs are covered in plated armor like crocodiles with large crystalline spikes jutting out from their backs and shoulders. Their tails are long and end in a sharp point made of bone. Males will have a frill of crystalline horns covering the back of their heads and a small horn on the brow of their nose pointing inward, while females will have a simple pair of horns behind their heads.   Ice drakes are the fastest member of dragons on foot, able to run as fast as a horse. The muscles in their legs allow them to climb uneven terrain and fall from extremely high hills and small mountains. They use this to their advantage when hunting prey animals, like mammoths and woolly rhinos, who can't maneuver as well. Ice drakes are incapable of flight like fire wyverns and lightning lungs but are capable of breathing the elemental power of ice.   When an ice drake uses its elemental breath, it releases a strong wind from its lungs filled with frozen particles that, upon contact with a solid surface, will create small-to-large glacier-like structures that can cause massive damage. These frozen structures can completely envelop a creature in ice or stab through them on massive, bloodstained icicles. These magic particles emanate from an organ sack attached to their lungs, dubbed drake shards.   Ice drakes have an incredible resistance to freezing cold temperatures, being able to survive in environments below -45 degrees without discomfort. Similar to fire wyverns, ice drakes radiate large amounts of freezing cold air around them, turning the immediate air around them into snowflakes and small patches of snow and ice.

Ecology and Habitats

Ice drakes live solely in the arctic environments of Mowera, particularly in the northernmost regions of the continent. Ice drakes live in large forested areas and high mountains with terrain only they can manage. They will use these environments to their advantage when hunting prey. Ice drakes make their homes within large cave systems and will cover the entire inner surface of the cave in ice and snow. If an ice drake can not readily find a large enough cave for it to reside in, it will carve a makeshift cave on the side of a mountain. Unlike fire wyverns who, depending on their environmental location, hibernate, ice drakes don't hibernate and are active all year long. Like any other dragon, if an ice drake discovers a sapient being has entered its territory, it will go out of its way to find and kill them. The reasons why have ranged from simple dominance displays to potential personal trauma with sapient species.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Ice drakes are the sole apex predators on Mowera and hunt large herds/packs of prey animals by ambush. The most common strategy used by ice drakes is hiding in large amounts of snow or miniature glaciers created by themselves. If dense enough, ice drakes will also use forests to ambush. When hunting, ice drakes will either run their prey down and tackle them using their formidable jaws and sharp claws or will fire a short breath of ice, depending on the size of the prey. If it is a small, nimble animal, like a elk, or an animal of extreme strength, like a mammoth, it will use its elemental breath.   Like other dragon species, ice drakes are capable of storing fat within their waists and can survive for up to a month on this alone. While other species of dragon can survive for 11-15 days without food, ice drakes can survive up to 23 days in total starvation, although they will become more desperate in their food items, eating small creatures that would normally go unnoticed.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Ice drakes have incredible perception and sensory powers. With forward-facing eyes and good binocular vision, ice drake are capable of seeing an object relatively clear from 7 km away. Ice drakes also have very good senses of smell, picking up smells from 7 km away. Although still better than humans, ice drakes comparatively don't have very good hearing.
