Mouraine Contract Law

Mouraine Contract Law is a regional magical effect which compels beings, who enter into a Mouraine contract, to magically adhere to the terms and conditions and accept the outcome upon the end of or expiration of a contract.   The effects of Contract Law emanate from a physical artifact taking the shape of a large open scroll made of adamantine, known as the Foundation Contract. It provides the power to create and enforce contracts. It also lays out the basis for how to do draft and empower them. The Foundation Contract further empowers a number of Pillars which are used by Court Judges and Contract Masters to empower contracts.    The effects of Contract Law are split into two segments, taking effect at the beginning and the end of a contract.   The beginning of Contract Law takes effect upon the signing of a contract. Once signed, up to three effects are placed on the Patron and/or Contractors: A Compulsion, Restriction, and/or a Requirement.   A Compulsion is used to ensure the Contractor is going to focus on fulfilling or completing the goal or objective of the contract. A Restriction is to prevent someone from taking or completing an action. Restrictions in a contract are used to create the framework in which a Requirement needs to be fulfilled. Usually this is done to prevent wide spread, unintended consequences, or to maintain focus on the objective of the contract. A Requirement is used to measure a specific goal or objective that needs to be fulfilled by the end of a contract. Requirements are normally not subject to breaking.   The end of Contract Law takes effect once a contract has been completed, the terms are broken, or the contract is deemed unfulfilled. It is at this time that the Compulsions, Restrictions, and/or Requirements are ended, no longer in effect, and the reward or consequences take effect.   Upon completion of a contract the reward or payment, determined by the Patron during the draft, is granted to the Contractor. This reward or payment is held, by the Contract Court, upon signing and distributed once it has been deemed complete. Contracts can be partially or fully completed. Even a partially completed contract will not result in a negative consequence.   In order for a contract to be complete the Patron and Contractors must meet with a Judge and/or Contract Master in the Court. Typically both are present. They all meet in an official Court office within range of a Pillar and present their case for completing the contract. The Judge and/or Contract Master act as medium between the contract and the pillar to determine the outcome. If the outcome is determined to be positive the Court/Patron pays out the reward. If the outcome is negative, either broken or unfulfilled, the contract ends and the consequences are determined or enforced.   If the terms of a contract are broken or deemed unfulfilled the consequences, from the draft, are enforced on the Patron and/or the Contractor, effective immediately. The negative effects for breaking the terms of a contract vary significantly and are determined by the Patron, Judge, or Contract Master while drafting the contract. Negative consequences typically have a specified duration determined by a Judge or Contract Master outlined in the contract itself. Sometimes the duration is indefinite and removing it requires arbitration by the Court.

Manifestation

Upon signing a contract the patron and contractor(s) are magically bound by its Terms and Conditions. Signees to the contract are magically compelled to follow any Terms or risk breaking the contract and suffering the predetermined consequences.   There are a number of different factors which determine the outcomes of a contract. The outcome can be positive, neutral, or negative depending on which terms are or are not fulfilled. Positive outcomes typically results in the Patron paying out the reward to the Contractor(s). Neutral results see one or both sides of the contract not fulfilling the terms and the contract is considered null and void. Negative outcomes result in the Patron or Contractor(s) being inflicted with the predetermined consequences, and these are drawn from a wide variety of potential effects.   The negative result of a contract can manifest in mundane or ways with some common example here: 1. Court or Law consequences 2. Geas effect and consequence 3. Curses 4. Madness 5. Exhaustion effects 6. Minor/Major drawback(from artifact lists)
