Vestan Shipyards
The Vestan Shipyards are sometimes referred to as the Jewel of the Belt, although not within earshot of anyone from Vesta. Rough and industrial the shipyards and associated manufacturing centres make good use of the asteroid's plentiful materials, and those found and harvested from smaller asteroids in the region, to build some of the finest ships of Transhumanity. Vesta is owned and operated by the Vestan Corporation, who has operated the asteroid for over a hundred and fifty years under a successful Infrastructure as a Service model. Rather than having a great deal of proficiency in shipbuilding, the Vestan Corporation has built their expertise in building, supplying, and maintaining all of the expensive infrastructure, equipment, and administrative hassles associated with shipbuilding. They handle supply agreements, shipping, storage, and provide space and state of the art equipment to their customers, all for a hefty rental fee of course. The Vestan Corporation also owns all mining rights on the asteroid. They provide services and equipment to independent miners as well as small operation mining companies, and buy the bulk of the mining output themselves, which they refine and sell to the shipbuilding companies. They also own fleets of cargo ships and small rock-hopper fleets that they lease to independent contractors. Vesta Corporation has they fingers in every part of the supply chain of mining and shipbuilding, while very little manufacturing of any kind themselves.
Vestan Station proper has been tunnelled out of the crust of Vesta, and the asteroid has been spun up to provide gravity at 1/3 Earth Normal Gravity on the levels closest to the surface. The Shipyards are locked into a co-orbital period with Vesta around the Sun and maintain a near constant distance from the Asteroid but are not locked in a stationary orbit with it. A small rotating ring station at the shipyards provides a comfortable 1/3g for the workers, while the shipyards themselves are kept at zero-g. A small space-elevator connects the Vesta Station docks to Vesta Station, with regular shuttle service between the docks and the Shipyards.
