The Azure Sea

Scope

The motivation behind building The Azure Sea

The world is being used for a Nautical based dnd 5e campaign but i want it to be open and used for multiple campaigns in the future, allowing characters to be pulled in for a multitude of reasons.

The goal of the project

A long standing world for my friends and I to continue adventuring in, at the moment i like to think of it as pirates of the carribean meets jackass.

The Azure Sea's Unique Selling point

It is a world on the brink of technological revolution (firearms) with a recent surge of piracy as well as an expanding world government.

Theme

Genre

Late Renaissance level technology, fueled by magic and scientific revolutions coming from the east.

Reader Experience

I want the world to feel large and mystical. I want the players to feel like the world is bigger than just the party but as they progress they can have bigger and bigger impacts on the world around them.

Reader Tone

Pirates of the Carribean. Starts light and foolhearty but as the world progresses more and more things become dark.

Character Agency

The amount of agency is ever increasing. From the starting point of improving or destroying quality of life for citizens of saltmarsh or helping local governments, to ruling their own island or the sea for that matter.

Focus

Technological influence. The world is rapidly growing and expanding and with it comes great technological advances. This time being in gunpowder and siege weaponry. As the characters move eastward in the world more and more technology becomes prevalent in the world.
Rule of Law. Saltmarsh is a pretty lawless place all things considered. The government is slowly rolling in as news of gold and other precious materials are being found in the nearby hills. The king sends more and more miners. More and more government agents. More and more of his citizens to saltmarsh every day to stabilize his rule in the growing port city. The sea princes grip on the eastern azure seas grows deeper every passing year. Even though the king had defeated them 20 years ago in a great war, they are recovering quickly under their new leader, The Commodore, a mysterious figure with links to saltmarsh and the government in the city.

Drama

The Commodore is slowly gathering more and more sea princes with the goal of taking saltmarsh as his own city and building his own nation from there. He first wants to sieze the sield isle and from there, use his fleet to blockade the city and ships trying to enter/leave. Since the City of Saltmarsh is surrounded by deep marshes and rough terrain, the city would not be able to recieve the amount of supplies needed from the kings men and thus would have to capitulate to the Sea Princes. He is orchestrating this plot from the disguise of Gellan Primewater, a waterhaven nobleman merchant, who has taken a seat on saltmarshes Council of Elders.
Calgamau Island has a deep curse set upon it by the demon Berstuc, who tricked the Druids of Calgamau to do a ritual of sacrilage, corrupting the trees and great life well of the island.
The party has a Rune Seal/ Map, given to them by Kenkyona Kufuku, a friend from the land of Kozakura. This map leads them to a fortune promised by the ancestral family of Kufuku. It has also led others in their pursuit. After showing the map to an agent of the Commodore, he sent a ship of sea princes to sieze the map at whatever cost, and has set his sights on whatever treasure is on the island, believing he could use it to aid himself in his cause of siezing Saltmarsh for his own.
The Sauhaugin of the Coral Forest have been striking out at local merfolk, searching their cities and refuges for an item unknown. This item is currently in the possesion of one Kalclypso Constantine, captain of The Silver Narwhal, a ship in the fleet of the Heirs of the Sea. The item is an orb that has been blessed by the Goddess Aerdri Feyna. It is wanted by the Sauhagin as they plan to corrupt it and sacrifice it to their god of the Sharks, reawakening his lost champion within the coral forests.
The King of Waterdeep is sending more and more Government Agents to the town of Saltmarsh, as well as miners and citizens, in an attempt to sway his influence in the town more into his favor. This is unwanted as the citizens are used to a more hands off approach and prefer to rule among themselves instead of bowing to a king.
