Sally Bailey-Brijild

A trickster conwoman (congirl? She's 13) trash-diving rat-eating authorities-avoiding thieving swindling banditing burgling street-performing magical girl whose magic abilities consist of the ease with which she can burn entire towns to the ground at the cost of massive dietary needs, and who lives on the run from Lamara's royal authorities, who themselves want to keep her existence secret (even at the cost of her life) so that nobody else kidnaps or recruits her...

Their need to keep her secret it a good half of why she's even been able to evade capture for so long. As far as most are concerned she's just a scraggly girl, albeit one who's crafty and tricky (if you're able to perfectly time the moment you're reading that to a part of Brittle Bones Nicky where it says he's crafty and tricky, you die instantly), and even those who figure she's a Brijild assume she's an escaped War Thrall who's been spayed already and so don't realize how valuable she is as a potential hostage or slave for sale to the highest bidding faction.

War Thralls? Brijilds? Thicc Shrek what the fuck are you talking about?

Lamara is a nation whose cultures and especially government do not respect the concept of human freedom. In Lamara, personal autonomy is not considered important, loyalty and obedience are.

Chattel slavery, children being considered the property of their parents, arranged marriages, a tiered feudal society, serfdom, indentured servitude, inheriting debt from your parents whether you want to or not, and countless other examples where your "rightful place" and the will of those considered to be above you are more important than what you actually want to be doing with your existence. These are Lamara's norm, and not many people have a choice about how they live.

Brijilds are one of Lamara's magic families. They lost in a civil war against the crown, and so it was declared that all Brijilds will be the property of whoever the reigning Monarch is.

Brijilds widely come in 2 varieties: Freckled and non freckled.

A Brijild with freckles can launch fire from those freckles.

A Brijild without freckles will still produce the fuel that the freckled Brijilds use, but has no freckles to launch it with.

The enslaved Brijild women (only the children of a female Brijild will be Brijilds) were forced to marry non-freckled slaves (slaves are still required to be married to their sexual partners) to have non-freckled, non-dangerous Brijild children.

Over 150 years later, things have shifted the other way. Non-freckled Brijild women are interchangeably forced to marry freckled or non-freckled men. Freckled Brijild children are separated from their parents at birth to be raised as soldiers for Lamara's Monarch, and spayed so they can't create vengeful Brijilds (male freckled Brijilds don't make Brijild kids, but are spayed anyway "Cos fuck 'em, that's why." - Lamara) who might work for the crown's enemies.

Sally is a freckled Brijild. Her father, a man punished with slavery for killing his commander in battle and then forced to marry Sally's mother, was able to escape with her, also preventing her from being spayed.

They lived together in hiding, Sally only discovering her abilities by accident as her father didn't tell her about them beforehand, until Sally's father was killed when she was 12. She escaped her father's killers, who were there to take or kill her, and has been on the run ever since.

Personal history

Read Brija's personal history to know about the parents.

After escaping the fortress with his daughter, Sam went into hiding with her. He raised her in the wilderness of Underba, a region that's still subject to a Declaration of Wilderness*, regularly hunting and fishing over a wide area at the same time as using massive abandoned underground fungal farms to get his daughter enough food to grow big and healthy.

When she was 5, she fully realized that she had fire abilities and, after her father found out, spent the next 7 years being slowly, slowly informed about what she is and why she needs to stay hidden.

She also learned all sorts of cool skills from her father like how to hunt, fight, track etc. He couldn't do much to teach her how to use her fire abilities, but he taught her everything else he knew. Her favourite weapons for hunting ended up being a spear, bow and a pair of knives.

Anyway, she proceeded to shoot fire off a cliff every few days or so. This was sort of necessary since letting her fuel build up is bad for her health, but doing it off a cliff where anyone in the surrounding wilderness could see it was plain stupid, and she kinda knew it was but did it anyway because of the fire being pretty.

Lo and behold, a kid and his friends, who'd secretly go into the area to forage for food and play, saw her. They were regular commoners, and kids, and hadn't yet been taught about the Brijilds.

She and the kids became friends, with some initial friction since Sally had never met any humans other than her father, until she accidentally caused a forest fire while showing off to them, resulting in one of them dying and serious injuries to the others.

When they got home and told their parents of what had happened, the children were kept captive in their village's prison (most villages don't have prisons... depends on their approach to criminals and solving disputes) to prevent any risk of them going and warning Sally.

The one of them who'd previously been her best friend, angry at Sally for accidentally killing his little brother, revealed the way to Sally's house, which he'd been to once while Sally's father, Sam, was out hunting.

Sam didn't know of this for a week, only finding out when he hunted in the area Sally had burnt. He saw the Lamaran soldiers, led by a man who'd once been his best friend, going through the area and towards his home.

Seeing the number of soldiers, 15 or so, he figured he could actually kill them all. He went to his house, pulled a lever he'd designed to activate all its booby traps (fun fact: back when he was in our world his favourite movies were the Home Alone series), and got ready to fight his friend.

Sally, meanwhile, was sent to a cave to take a sea-boat there and sail away with it. They'd agreed on another cove to meet up in, and the insignia he'd put up at the cave's entrance when he got there before her.

His former best friend was a trap expert.

So keeping him distracted while most of his soldiers went up and down the boobytrapped house was a big brain move. 8 of them searched the house, 8 of them died with Sam's friend thinking the sound was the result of Sam training his daughter to be a badass fighter like her papi.

Sam kept his former best friend distracted with talk. When said old friend realized what was actually killing his soldiers in that house by recognising the sound of a rope snapping, Sam attacked him and his soldiers.

Sam killed all the soldiers in a suicidal charge. Something something badass veteran vs fresh dweebs from a local garrison who've never seen combat.

Sam's former friend, however, was a much tougher opponent, and Sam was already wounded from fighting the other soldiers, his goal not being to survive - the blood loss and organ damage meant that ship had sailed - but to take his former friend down with him so there'd be nobody chasing after Sally for a while.

He failed. His former friend wasn't even seriously injured by their fight, easily taking Sam's sword (his daggers were both broken in their fight) chasing down the tracks Sally had been sloppy in covering up and seeing her in her boat.

Seeing the man covered in blood and holding her father's sword, Sally, who'd been waiting for her dad because she didn't want to be separated from him - even temporarily - and believed in his combat abilities being enough that it wasn't necessary, went fucking berserk and tried to kill her father's killer with her fire powers, coincidentally pushing her boat back away from the cove cos laws of momentum.

Thinking she'd killed him, she let her boat drift out to sea.

Reality was he was super alive, just horribly burnt and now hellbent on killing or capturing her.

Sally waited at the cove, despite the insignia being there and knowing logically that he wouldn't be there. She also speared and ate a shark, as you do.

She eventually moved on, finding some villages on the coast. She was initially terrified of being seen in any of these places, but after seeing another freckly ginger girl having a normal time she realized that her appearance alone wouldn't be a problem, assuming nobody who'd already seen her was present.

Her father had taught her a lot about how Lamara worked, but had overexaggerated the risks of leaving their forest. Her using her abilities was what would endanger her, as would just being a child with no guardian in a country with a massive slave economy, not her gingerness... although she'd still get bullied for it.

Some time later and she's a conwoman/girl trash-diving rat-eating authorities-avoiding thieving swindling banditing burgling street-performing odd-jobs-performing megadingus travelling town to town for food and fresh con victims. She's developed 10/10 street smarts.

She can't really hunt enough food to live off of because of shortage of game to eat outside the wilderness areas, and is scared that a wilderness area being the most logical place for her to go for food means that such places will be trapped for capturing her.

Sexuality

idk lol. Haven't got any planned love interests so for now undetermined.

Education

Her pa teaching her all he knew. He did not know how to read, though, so she is illiterate.

Employment

Con artist, thief, trash diver, hunter, etc.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Actually a total badass.

Failures & Embarrassments

Killing and injuring her friends, not killing her dad's killer.

When first seeing her aunt / her dad's sister, with neither being aware that they're related, she said "dad?" lmao.

Mental Trauma

Yes.

Intellectual Characteristics

Extremely intelligent and witty. You could say she's crafty and tricky.

Morality & Philosophy

She may be a thief, but she wouldn't try to physically or emotionally harm anyone... other than that one time.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Food. Not getting caught by Lamaran authorities.

Savvies & Ineptitudes

Good at most skills associated with hunting, fighting, stealing and con artistry. Sucks at sword fighting and axe fighting.

Likes & Dislikes

Likes energy rich foods and especially likes meat. The fire fuel Brijilds use is made using protein, so they pretty much constantly crave protein rich food like meat and fish.

Virtues & Personality perks

Brave, determined, intelligent. On the ego level she doesn't like being kind, but will feel extreme guilt until it pushes her to act with kindness anyway.

Vices & Personality flaws

Stubborn, hostile, deceptive.

Hygiene

Okay, here's a clue: homeless traveler trash-diver.

Social

Family Ties

Sarah's niece through her dad pa. Her twin sister is Brija Bailey-Brijild.

Through her dead ma, she's related to all Brijilds, and like them descended from Annala Brijild, although most of those relations are extremely distant.

Religious Views

Doesn't know much about it other than the gods her father personally worshipped, mostly being gods associated with nature and protection, but is a Lamaranist. Rejects parts of Lamaranism she doesn't like, such as claims that Brijilds are of demonic descent.

Social Aptitude

Very good at deceiving, and this combined with her non-existent pride makes her a joy to have around for egomaniacs and the like (aka most nobles), who she cons regularly.

Hobbies & Pets

Had a pet rat once... it got eaten by a bigger rat.

Speech

Says "aye" a lot, usually in a oppositional way:

Sarah: "You stole my boss's money, and you think I'm going into what looks like a drug den with you?"

Sally: "Aye! I ain't the type to go getting people killed - not on purpose, anyway!"

Sarah: "Killed? I thought I was just gonna get mugged. I'm definitely not going in now."

Sally: "Aye aye aye aye aye! C'mon, I just wanna show you something!"
