Giant Ice Bears

Prompt 25: A species considered monstrous by some   Giant Ice Bears   In the Glacial mountains of Thar’kor there is a species of bear that has evolved to thrive in the harsh frozen wastes, the Giant Ice bear. The bears are twice the size of a normal bear and ten times as ferocious. With thick, tangled manes of dirty white hair, razor-sharp claws and extended incisors they are a killing machine, the apex predator of the area.   Although they are large they move surprisingly fast and with their powerful muscles can launch themselves into large vaults reaching up to 30 ft. These traits make them a formidable hunters, which is part of their great success and large size. They hunt in the lower reaches of the mountains where the large game can be found but often retreat into the icy peaks where they have caves or dens where they sleep and raise cubs.   Their caves are often found within the regions of the mountains affected by the dimensional ripples and they are either attracted to the ripples or use the ripples as a natural defence or advantage of some kind, no one is sure. What is known for certain, is the bears are unaffected by the ripples. They have evolved some capacity to navigate the ripples and stay in their plane when the ripples strike, thus are not at risk of being torn apart or lost to time and space. No is sure how they do this, but, it is theorised that if someone were to tame an Ice bear they may have a form of transport that could navigate them through the region unharmed.   The giant ice bears are considered extremely dangerous, which makes them extremely valuable. Only a very few people are crazy or stupid enough to hunt these bears, those that are successful carry a reputation as the strongest, most resourceful and cunning hunters in all Thar’kor. Many people meet a terrible end at the hands of the Ice Bears, so to have killed even one carries with it an aura of respect and awe that travels ahead of the person. Often the hunters who do kill these bears take their first kills pelt as a trophy that they wear on their hunts from then on. This is not only a badge of honour and an indicator of status and wealth (the pelt being worth a small kingdom in the lowlands) it is a great aid to camouflage one's self & one’s scent while hunting in the glacial mountains.
