Herræyier Lung

A member of the Mæyreborne culture, that has trained in food acquisition, is not considered a Hunter until they have, in a major organized hunt, caught and killed their first Mæyre Herræyier that is at least 2 meters long. Once they have achieved this they are allowed to hunt the larger creatures of the The Mysted Mæyre , whereas before they were only allowed to hunt smaller creatures, including small birds and rodents, or to catch animals in the lakes and waterways of the Mæyre.

In some cultures outside of the Mæyre, including the Riy-ein of the plains and hills to the east of the Mæyre, the Rite of Initiation of Hunters involves eating a vital piece of the first animal they killed in a major hunt. Usually, particularly for the Riy-ein, they eat the heart of the animal as a rite of passage. However, in the Mæyre, because of the nature of the myst and the animals they hunt within it, the heart and brain are reserved, and specially prepared, for the leaders and elders. For the hunters, who have trained and apprenticed to be allowed to hunt for the community, they prepare the most important organ of their premier animal - the lungs. The lungs are integral for the Herræyier to breathe in the mysts and the air. For an apprentice hunter to be able to hunt within the myst, long enough to not drown, is an intense feat of stamina, strength, agility, and prowess. The lungs represent those important aspects.

The lungs are taken and prepared through a specific manner and ritual, known only to the elders, before they are readied and to be eaten. The use of Mæyrebeeren is essential to this procedure, including many different aspects of the plant. A combination of marinating and other cooking processes allows for the mucus lining within the lungs to be preserved, which is a required for the ritual to be completed.

The specially prepared lungs are only permitted to be eaten by someone who is being initiated into the Hunters as well as anyone previously initiated as a Hunter.

Once consumed, the newly initiated Hunter undergoes a minor transformation, allowing the Hunter to receive a portion of the ability of the lungs for themselves. The transformation is both physical and mental, and gives them the ability to spend time a significant amount of time out in the myst, to breathe the mysty air, and sharpens their awareness.

It makes the hunters hardier in the Mæyre; the physiological change fortifies the lungs and makes it semi-amphibious, permitting the Hunter to be able to breathe normally within the dense humidity of the thick mysts. They are not fully amphibious, though, and cannot breathe in waterways or bodies of water within the Mæyre. It also makes the Hunters a little weaker than they normally would be in the lands outside of the Mæyre, if they were to ever venture outside of it, since the air is significantly dryer. Since this has not happened in recent memory, the Mæyreborne aren’t concerned about the potential weakness. Mentally, it provides additional focus, clarity while hunting, and an increase in acumen, both situational and spacial.

These changes are only possible through the special preparation. If someone were to eat the lungs, cooked normally, they would grant no additional benefits.
