Selûne

The Moon Maiden

Vignette co-written with treborile.
As they make their way down the coast, Kit goes "hunting with Gnawdy" as the others set up camp. He walks for a while, finally settling at the base of a tree far from their site and instructing his spider to bite anyone who isn't a marked friend.   He pulls a handful of pebbles from his bag, and with the other grabs the amulet around his neck. Kit focuses only on the textures in his hands, clearing his mind of his party, his spider, and the area around him. For the first time since he left the monastery, he reaches outward as he meditates, searching for a presence he's supposed to have always felt.   As Kitrick focuses on the amulet, trying to summon--whoever might answer--an echoing whisper comes to his mind. At first, he can't be sure if he's just so hopeful to hear something that you're just imagining things, until an actual phrase pierces through, clear as a bell.   "Shar will not answer you, child," a woman's melancholy voice says. "She has seen too much of a future in you when she only teaches hopelessness." There is a pause as she lets him absorb this. "I know not why you have chosen to reach out this night, but I remember your act of mercy. I am willing to listen, and to speak for a short time, if you so wish."   Kitrick fights against his panic as she continues speaking. He clears his mind again, still reaching for the source of the voice as he settles himself.   "You saw me? Have you seen everything?"   A soft laugh. "I was watching over her, back then. And I saw you. I cannot say I have been able to watch you at all times, but all who embrace the light of the stars have been guided by them. You know who I am, do you not?"   "Selûne." He's quiet for a moment. "I know I'm not... Yours? But if you can.... They're still good. Can you do something to keep her away from them?" And he concentrates on the people he's traveled with for months, focusing especially on Tally and Medericus, showing her what they've accomplished. "If you need more proof maybe... Talk to Pelor? Or something?"   There is a surprisingly girlish giggle that makes her sound much younger (much, much younger) than she really is. "I cannot promise that I can intervene directly--the constant battle with darkness is my fate. But remember: there cannot be shadow where there is no light." Her voice sounds wry. "I will choose to believe your word. And..." she seems to get more gentle with her words, here. "None of my followers ever belong to me, but if you ever choose to walk in my light, I will accept you with open arms. It is your choice. The light of the moon shines in your favor."   Having seen what Shar expected from her followers, he's immediately wary. "What do you want me to do? Do I have to talk to you like this every day?"   "No. All I ask is that you embrace the light of the moon and stars, and share your gifts with those that need it. Fight against the darkness when it presents itself, and be not afraid of what the future holds. And in return I will be the guiding light to help you find your way."   "I'll... Think about it." He frowns. "If I do decide. Do you listen better than she does? Do I just stop talking now or....? I don't know how this works."   Another laugh, silvery and light. "I will admit I am not always able to answer. But if it is an absolute, dire need, drink from a flask containing water that has been under all three full moons, and call my name aloud. I will always answer." Her voice is gentle. "How do you end a conversation with anyone else?" she asks. "You say, 'goodbye'. So, goodbye, Kitrick. Be safe, and let the stars guide you... and your friends."

Holidays

While most rituals of the church are performed personally and usually involve dancing and offerings of wine or milk, all clerics observe the Conjuring of the Three Moons and the Mystery of the Night. The Conjuring of the Three Moons is performed by a group when the three moons are full. It calls the Shards, who are blue-haired female planetar servants of the goddess, to do the bidding of the clergy, usually to battle the minions of Shar. At dawn the next day, the Shards elevate one mortal priestess to their ranks, before they departed for the planes.   The Mystery of the Night is performed annually. During it, clerics commune with the deity while in a trance, in which Selûne gives them powerful visions and dreams, or "face to face" conversations with the deity herself.

Divine Goals & Aspirations

She is believed to guide herders to good pastures, to aid ships lost on the sea and travelers lost in the wilds, to deliver love to those who sought it and bless marriages, to guarantee the safety of births, and to watch over relationships and connections between people. Selûne sometimes blesses things beautiful purely for the sake of their beauty, and grants visions to people who desired them for good purposes.   Avatars of Selûne most often wander the Outer Planes, seeking out magical lore or an advantage to help her destroy Shar once and for all. She is reluctant to manifest avatars on Terrix, as Shar takes joy in obliterating them there. However, Selûne often provides her priests with temporary powers or spells to help them achieve the missions she gives them.   Selûne is in constant conflict with Shar, her sister and the goddess of darkness.Their war is the eternal drama of the sky, vital to the balance of nature: the dark of the night devouring the light of the moons, before the moons are renewed and the cycle repeating.

Quotes & Catchphrases
"Let all on whom my light falls be welcome if they desire to be so. As the silver moon waxes and wanes, so too does all life. Trust in my radiance, and know that all love alive under my light shall know my blessing. Turn to the moon, and I will be your true guide."
